Abstract

A device comprising a plurality of metallic conical radiators, said conical radiators substantially hollow having a vertex end and a base end, a first cylindrical portion disposed annularly about the base end of the conical portion, a metallic second cylindrical portion coupled to the vertex of the conical portion, said cylindrical portion having a threaded aperture, and an antenna feed coupled to the threaded aperture. The device may have patches disposed on a substrate as a one or multi-dimensional array. An RF feed may be coupled to the radiators.

Claims (22)

1. A method including:

forming a conical radiator having a top cylindrical end and a vertex end, said vertex end including a substantially cylindrical portion extending from the vertex end, said substantially cylindrical portion including a threaded receiver, and

disposing the cylindrical portion on a dielectric surface at a predetermined height with a fastener disposed through the dielectric surface and into the threaded receiver, wherein the height effectuates a predetermined impedance.

2. The method of claim 1 further including disposing a ground plane on the dielectric surface, wherein the ground plane further operates to effectuate the predetermined impedance.

3. The method of claim 2 further including:

coupling a radio frequency (RF) transmitter to the conical radiator, and radiating RF energy from the conical radiator.

4. The method of 3 wherein the height of the cylindrical portion and the size of the ground plane operate to direct the radiated energy in a predetermined pattern.

5. The methods of claim 2 wherein the ground plane is a patch antenna.

6. The method of claim 1 further including:

disposing a plurality of conical radiators on the dielectric surface in a one-dimensional array, said disposing operable to effectuate a predetermined radiation pattern.

7. A method including:

selecting a desired radiation band;

forming a conical radiator, said radiator having a vertex on one end and base end opposite the vertex, said vertex including a substantially cylindrical, threaded shaft portion;

disposing the conical radiator on a dielectric substrate with a fastener disposed through the dielectric surface and into the threaded shaft portion;

coupling RF energy to the conical radiator, said coupling at a characteristic impedance,

wherein the dimensions of the cone are operable to match impedance and radiate the RF energy in a predetermined pattern.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the band is either 2.43 GHz or 5 GHz.

9. The method of claim 7 further including:

disposing a patch antenna on the dielectric substrate, wherein the patch antenna further operates to radiate the RF energy.

10. The method of claim 9 further including:

disposing a plurality of conical radiators on the dielectric substrate to form an array that radiates the RF energy in a predetermined pattern.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the patch antenna is extended to encompass each of the plurality of conical radiators having the effect of impedance matching the array to the RF energy.
