Abstract

A plurality of networking nodes provides a wireless network fabric that serves at least two devices. Each networking node stores global communication topology information for the wireless network fabric. One of the networking nodes performs global fabric management functions to maintain a communication channel among the at least two devices, and is responsive to a triggering event to identify a next global fabric manager from the other networking nodes. Upon detection of an attack, the global fabric management responsibilities migrate from the networking node to the next global fabric manager while maintaining connectivity between the at least two devices.

Claims (33)

1. A networking node coupled to other networking nodes in a wireless network fabric, the fabric serving at least two devices, the networking node configured for:

storing global communication topology information for the wireless network fabric;

being configurable to perform global fabric management functions to maintain a communication channel among the at least two devices; and

being responsive to a triggering event to identify a next global fabric manager from the other networking nodes, and upon detection of an attack, migrating global fabric management responsibilities from the networking node to the next global fabric manager while the at least two devices retain connectivity over the communication channel.

2. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein the wireless network fabric comprises at least one of a peer-to-peer network, a mesh network, and a storage area network.

3. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein migrating is configured to maintain the connectivity regardless of movement of networking nodes in the wireless network fabric.

4. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein the at least two devices comprise at least one of a set, the set comprising a cell phone, a computer, a storage device, a game device, and a sensor device.

5. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein at least one networking node in the wireless network fabric comprises at least one of the at least two devices.

6. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein the communication channel comprises a port-to-port path among networking nodes in the wireless network fabric.

7. The networking node of claim 1 , comprising at least one of a switch, a router, an access point, a repeater, and a network bridge.

8. The networking node of claim 1 , wherein migrating comprises migrating in a deterministic fashion or a non-deterministic fashion.

9. The networking node of claim 8 , wherein the non-deterministic fashion comprises at least one of a bidding process and an election process.

10. A method, comprising:

storing global communication topology information in each of a plurality of networking nodes in a wireless network fabric configured to serve at least two devices;

configuring one of the plurality of networking nodes to perform global fabric management functions to maintain a communication channel among the at least two devices;

providing for responsiveness to a triggering event to identify a next global fabric manager from the plurality of networking nodes; and

upon detection of an attack, migrating global fabric management responsibilities from the one of the plurality of networking nodes to the next global fabric manager while retaining connectivity between the at least two devices.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein migrating is configured to maintain the connectivity regardless of movement of networking nodes in the wireless network fabric.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the one of the plurality of networking nodes and the next global fabric manager comprises at least one of the at least two devices.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein storing comprises storing a port-to-port path among the plurality of networking nodes.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein migrating comprises migrating in a deterministic fashion or a non-deterministic fashion.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the non-deterministic fashion comprises at least one of a bidding process and an election process.

16. A networking node configured to perform the method of claim 10 , wherein the networking node comprises at least one of a switch, a router, an access point, a repeater, and a network bridge.

17. A computer-readable media product comprising a physical, non-transitory computer readable memory storing software instructions that cause, via execution, at least one processor in one of a plurality of networking nodes in a wireless network fabric to operate as a global fabric manager by:

storing global communication topology information in each of the plurality of networking nodes, the wireless network fabric configured to serve at least two devices;

configuring one of the plurality of networking nodes to perform global fabric management functions to maintain a communication channel among the at least two devices;

providing for responsiveness to a triggering event to identify a next global fabric manager from the plurality of networking nodes; and

upon detection of an attack, migrating global fabric management responsibilities from the one of the plurality of networking nodes to the next global fabric manager while maintaining connectivity between the at least two devices.

18. The computer-readable media product of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the one of the plurality of networking nodes and the next global fabric manager comprises at least one of the at least two devices.

19. The computer-readable media product of claim 17 , wherein storing comprises storing a port-to-port path among the plurality of networking nodes.

20. The computer-readable media product of claim 17 , wherein migrating is configured to maintain the connectivity regardless of movement of the plurality of networking nodes.

21. The computer-readable media product of claim 17 , wherein migrating comprises migrating in a deterministic fashion or a non-deterministic fashion.

22. The computer-readable media product of claim 21 , wherein the non-deterministic fashion comprises at least one of a bidding process and an election process.
