Abstract

A modular femoral prosthesis for use during performance of a hip revision procedure includes a proximal body component, a distal stem component, and a locking bolt. Surgical instruments and methods for use in implanting such a modular femoral prosthesis are disclosed.

Claims (17)

1. A method of performing a surgical procedure to implant an orthopaedic hip prosthesis, comprising:

implanting a distal stem component into an intramedullary canal of a patient's femur,

installing a trial shaft to the proximal end of the implanted distal stem component such that an alignment key of the trial shaft is positioned in a keyway of the implanted distal stem component,

installing a discrete trial neck on the trial shaft and rotating the trial neck relative to the trial shaft so as to position the trial neck in a selected version,

locking the trial neck relative to the trial shaft in the selected version

uninstalling the trial shaft from the implanted distal stem component with the trial neck locked relative to the trial shaft in the selected version,

installing a version-replicating instrument to the proximal end of the implanted distal stem component such that an alignment key of the version-replicating instrument is positioned in the keyway of the implanted distal stem component, and

installing the trial shaft, with the trial neck locked relative to the trial shaft in the selected version, on the version-replicating instrument such that the alignment key of the trial shaft is positioned in an alignment slot of the version-replicating instrument.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trial neck is installed on the trial shaft prior to installation of the trial shaft to the implanted distal stem component.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the trial neck is installed on the trial shaft after the trial shaft is installed to the implanted distal stem component.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the trial shaft comprises a rotatable locking screw having a number of threads formed in a distal end thereof, and

installing the trial shaft to the implanted distal stem component comprises threading the threads of the locking screw into a threaded bore of the distal stem component.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

installing a proximal body component on the version-replicating instrument, and

rotating the proximal body component so that a version of the proximal body component matches the selected version of the trial neck relative to the trial shaft.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the proximal body component is installed on the version-replicating instrument prior to installation of the trial shaft on the version-replicating instrument.
