Abstract

The present technology pertains to responding to a kernel level file event for a content item and presenting a file event window associated with the content item. A client device can detect the kernel level file event for the content item. This can be accomplished using a kernel extension on a client device that is networked with a content management system. The client device can then retrieve data associated with the content item, including an instruction for the content item. The client device can then perform the instruction. This instruction can be to retrieve collaboration data from the content management system and present the collaboration data in a file event window.

Claims (40)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

detecting a kernel level file event for a content item, by a kernel extension of a networked content management system client application, wherein the kernel level file event is a content item access event that originates from a graphical user interface of a file explorer to a local file system, wherein the networked content management system client application and kernel extension operate on a client device;

in response to the detecting the kernel level file event, the networked content management system client application retrieving metadata stored in the local file system in connection with the content item, the metadata including an instruction to display information that can be retrieved from a server of a networked content management system over a network connection;

retrieving, by the networked content management system client application, from the networked content management system the information prior to displaying the content item, wherein the information includes conditions for accessing the content item;

displaying the information; and

displaying the content item.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , comprising:

displaying, with the information, a selectable graphical user interface element effective to open the content item;

receiving a selection of the selectable graphical user interface element; and

wherein the displaying of the content item is responsive to the receiving of the selection of the selectable graphical user interface element.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the information includes a comment associated with the content item.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the information includes a task associated with the content item.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the selectable graphical user interface element indicating an acceptance of the conditions.

6. A system comprising:

a client device including an operating system, a local file system, a file explorer of the local file system, a networked content management system client application, and a kernel extension of the content management system client application, wherein the client device is configured to:

detect a kernel level file event for a content item by the kernel extension, wherein the kernel level file event is a content item access event that originates from a graphical user interface of the file explorer;

in response to the detecting the kernel level file event, retrieve metadata stored in the local file system by the networked content management system client application in connection with the content item, the metadata including an instruction to display information that can be retrieved from a server of a networked content management system over a network connection;

retrieve, by the content management system client application, from the networked content management system, the information prior to displaying the content item, wherein the information includes conditions for accessing the content item;

display the information; and

display the content item.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the client device is configured to:

display, with the information, a selectable graphical user interface element effective to open the content item;

receive a selection of the selectable graphical user interface element; and

wherein the display of the content item is responsive to the receiving of the selection of the selectable graphical user interface element.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the information includes a comment associated with the content item.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the information includes a task associated with the content item.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the selectable graphical user interface element indicating an acceptance of the conditions.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon, the instructions are effective for causing a client device to:

detect a kernel level file event for a content item, by a kernel extension of a networked content management system client application, wherein the kernel level file event is a content item access event that originates from a graphical user interface of a file explorer to a local file system, wherein the networked content management system client application and kernel extension operate on the client device;

in response to the detecting the kernel level file event, retrieve metadata stored in the local file system by the networked content management system client application, in connection with the content item, the metadata including an instruction to display information that can be retrieved from a server over a network connection;

retrieve, by the networked content management system client application, from the networked content management system, the information prior to displaying the content item, wherein the information includes conditions for accessing the content item;

display the information; and

display the content item.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the instructions are effective for causing the client device to:

display, with the information, a selectable graphical user interface element effective to open the content item;

receive a selection of the selectable graphical user interface element; and

wherein the displaying of the content item is responsive to the receiving of the selection of the selectable graphical user interface element.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the information includes a comment associated with the content item.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the information includes a task associated with the content item.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the selectable graphical user interface element indicating an acceptance of the conditions.
