Abstract

Systems and methods for providing for the automatic instrument-based rapid reprocessing of an intact extracorporeal circuit for use in hemodialysis. The system includes a manifold with connectors for engaging a dialyzer as well as venous and arterial blood lines. The manifold is adapted to be moved from a dialysis machine to a reuse instrument without removing the dialyzer and associated blood lines. The system allows for reprocessing of the extracorporeal circuit wherein prior to the next treatment, there is no residual chemical disinfectant requiring testing, the extracorporeal circuit is pre-primed, the levels in the bubble traps are set, and all of the required quality assurance tests are performed and recorded.

Claims (34)

1. A system for use with a dialysis machine, the system comprising:

a blood separation device having a blood flow path and a second fluid flow path between a dialysate inlet and a dialysate outlet, the blood flow path having a blood inlet and a blood outlet;

a blood outlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood outlet;

a blood inlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood inlet; and

a manifold, the manifold being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device and further having a plurality of connectors, the connectors including first and second connectors being sized and configured for engagement with the patient ends of the blood inlet line and the blood outlet line during commencement of a reuse process, respectively,

wherein the manifold is attached to the blood separation device and wherein the blood separation device, blood outlet line, blood inlet line and manifold exist as a single unit prior to coupling to the dialysis machine for use and subsequent removal from the dialysis machine following use to commence the reuse process via a reuse instrument provided separate from the dialysis machine.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein said blood inlet line further includes at least one sidearm, said side arm including a free end; and

said manifold includes at least one connector sized and configured for engagement with the free end of the at least one blood inlet line side arm.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein said blood outlet line further includes at least one side arm, said side arm including a free end; and

said manifold includes at least one connector sized and configured for engagement with the free end of the at least one blood outlet line side arm.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein said manifold is sized and configured to provide a fluid communication pathway between each of the blood inlet line, the blood outlet line, the at least one blood inlet line side arm, the at least one blood outlet line side arm, and the reuse instrument to which the manifold is mated.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising the reuse instrument wherein the manifold is sized and configured to provide a fluid communication path between the blood separation device second flow path and the reuse instrument to which the manifold is mated.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manifold provides a fluid communication pathway between the dialysate inlet, the dialysate outlet and the reuse instrument.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manifold provides dialysate inlet and outlet connectors that pass through the manifold for direct engagement with the reuse instrument.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the manifold provides a plurality of termination points configured to mate with counterparts provided by the reuse instrument.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the termination points are at least one of needleless injection sites or female termination points.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first and second connectors being sized and configured for engagement with the patient ends of the blood inlet line and the blood outlet line during commencement of a reuse process includes being sized and configured for engagement with the patient ends of the blood inlet line and the blood outlet line during at least one of cleaning, disinfecting, rendering aseptic, rinsing, or priming for reuse.

11. A system for use with a dialysis machine, the system comprising:

a blood separation device having a blood flow path and a second fluid flow path between a dialysate inlet and a dialysate outlet, the blood flow path having a blood inlet and a blood outlet;

a blood outlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood outlet;

a blood inlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood inlet;

a reuse instrument; and

a manifold sized and configured to engage the blood separation device, the manifold further comprising (i) first and second connectors sized and configured to engage the patient ends of the blood inlet line and the blood outlet line, respectively, and (ii) a fluid communication pathway between the dialysate inlet, the dialysate outlet and the reuse instrument, wherein the reuse instrument is provided separate from the dialysis machine.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the fluid communication pathway includes dialysate inlet and outlet connectors that pass through the manifold for direct engagement with the reuse instrument.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the reuse instrument is configured to at least one of clean, disinfect, test, or prime at least one of the blood inlet line, the blood outlet line or the blood separation device.

14. A system for use with a dialysis machine, the system comprising:

a blood separation device having a blood flow path and a second fluid flow path between a dialysate inlet and a dialysate outlet, the blood flow path having a blood inlet and a blood outlet;

a blood outlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood outlet;

a blood inlet line having a device end and a patient end, the device end being sized and configured for engagement with the blood separation device blood inlet;

a reuse instrument including a plurality of counterparts; and

a manifold sized and configured to engage the blood separation device, the manifold further comprising (i) first and second connectors sized and configured to engage the patient ends of the blood inlet line and the blood outlet line, respectively, and (ii) a plurality of termination points configured to mate with the counterparts provided by the reuse instrument.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the termination points include needleless injection sites.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the termination points include female termination points.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the reuse instrument is configured to at least one of clean, disinfect, test, or prime at least one of the blood inlet line, the blood outlet line or the blood separation device.
