Abstract

One networking device includes a switch module, a server, and a switch controller. The switch module has ports with a communications interface of a first type (CI1) and ports with a communications interface of a second type (CI2). The server, coupled to the switch module via a first CI2 coupling, includes a virtual CI1 driver, which provides a CI1 interface in the server, defined to exchange CI1 packets with the switch module via the first CI2 coupling. The virtual CI1 driver includes a first network device operating system (ndOS) program. The switch controller, in communication with the switch module via a second CI2 coupling, includes a second ndOS program controlling, in the switch module, a packet switching policy defining the switching of packets through the switch module or switch controller. The first and second ndOS programs exchange control messages to maintain a network policy for the switch fabric.

Claims (18)

1. A networking device comprising:

a switch fabric;

external ports in the switch fabric;

a Ternary Content-Addressable Memory (TCAM) table in the switch fabric, the TCAM configured for storing classification information to classify packets received at the external ports;

a switch fabric classifier in the switch fabric configured to determine if there is classification information for an incoming packet in the TCAM table;

a control processor; and

a memory in communication with the control processor, the memory configured for storing a processor classification table with processor classification information to classify the packets received at the external ports;

wherein when there is classification information for the incoming packet in the TCAM table, the switch fabric classifier transmits the incoming packet to one of the external ports based on header information in the incoming packet and the classification information from the TCAM table;

wherein when there is no classification information for the incoming packet in the TCAM table, the switch fabric sends the incoming packet to the control processor for further classification;

wherein the ndOS program is in communication with other instances of the ndOS in other network devices to implement a global switching policy for network packets.

2. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the classification information includes classification criteria for one or more of a media access control (MAC) address, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, a Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), user datagram protocol (UDP), an OSI layer 4 information related to a TCP ports, an IPSec security association, a virtual local area network (VLAN) tag, a 802.1Q VLAN tag, or a 802.1Q-in-Q VLAN tag.

3. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , further including a resource coherency and analytics engine (RCAE) executing on the control processor, the RCAE being configured to collect statistics associated with the packets received at the external ports, wherein the statistics include one or more of packets received for a connection, packets dropped, number of cut-through packets received, queue length of each of the external ports, number of packets scheduled for transmission by external port, and latency.

4. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein packets with associated information in the TCAM table are switched in hardware.

5. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the incoming packet is classifiable based on any parameter in headers of layers 1 to 4 of the incoming packet.

6. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the TCAM table includes one or more of a MAC address, a virtual local area network (VLAN) identifier, a VXLAN tag, external port identifier for the MAC address, age of entry, timestamp for entry creation time, frequency of use for this MAC address, or timestamp when this MAC address was last used.

7. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , further including a first network device operating system (ndOS) program executing in the control processor, wherein the ndOS program is configured to control packet switching policy in the network device, the packet switching policy including a definition for switching incoming packets through the switch fabric or thorough the control processor.

8. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein when there is no classification information for the incoming packet in the TCAM table, the switch fabric adds an entry in the TCAM table to classify future packets of a same flow as the incoming packet.

9. The networking device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ndOS programs in multiple network devices cooperate to manage the content of the TCAM tables across the multiple network devices.
