Abstract

A method for providing content from a first node to a second node using a satellite communications system includes receiving side information at a gateway in the satellite communications system. The side information may be transmitted from a subscriber terminal to the gateway via a first communication path that includes a satellite link. The method also includes determining at the gateway that the side information is associated with first content available at the first node, and determining at the gateway that second content is available from a source other than the first node. The method also includes generating output content using the second content and the side information. The output content may be substantially the same as the first content. The method also includes providing the output content to the second node via a second communication path that does not include the satellite link.

Claims (58)

1. A method for providing content to a first node in a satellite communications system, the method comprising:

receiving side information at a first terminal over a satellite link from a second terminal;

determining, by the first terminal, from the side information that transmission of first content from a second node over the satellite link to a first node is pending, wherein the first node is on a same side of the satellite link as the first terminal and the second node is on a same side of the satellite link as the second terminal;

determining, by the first terminal, that alternative content that is substantially the same as the first content is accessible to the first node from a third node via a communications path that does not include the satellite link, the third node being different from the second node;

obtaining the alternative content from the third node via the communications path; and

providing the alternative content to the first node.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving the side information comprises receiving, at the first terminal over the satellite link from the second terminal, the side information but none of the first content.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving with the side information at the first terminal an initial portion of a transmission over the satellite link of the first content by the second terminal; and

in response to determining that the alternative content is accessible to the first node via the communications path that does not include the satellite link, signaling the second terminal to stop the transmission of the first content over the satellite link.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first terminal comprises the first node.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first terminal comprises the third node, and

the communications path is within the first terminal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first node comprises the third node, and

the communications path is within the first node.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the communications path is between the third node and the first terminal.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the obtaining the alternative content comprises:

obtaining, by the first terminal, second content via the communications path; and

generating, by the first terminal, the alternative content from the second content and the side information.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the second terminal is a gateway associated with a provider of satellite services, and

the first terminal is associated with a subscriber to the satellite services.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first terminal is a gateway associated with a provider of satellite services, and

the second terminal is associated with a subscriber to the satellite services.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting, by the second terminal, the side information but not the first content over the satellite link to the first terminal.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

transmitting, by the second terminal, the side information over the satellite link to the first terminal;

starting, by the second terminal, transmission of the first content over the satellite link to the first terminal; and

upon receiving over the satellite link from the first terminal an indication that the alternative content is accessible to the first node via the communications path, stopping, by the second terminal, the transmission of the first content over the satellite link to the first terminal.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating, by the second terminal, the side information from the first content.

14. A terminal in a satellite communications system, the first terminal comprising:

a receiving module configured to receive side information over a satellite link from a second terminal;

an identification module configured to determine from the side information that transmission of first content from a second node over the satellite link to a first node is pending, wherein the first node is on a same side of the satellite link as the first terminal and the second node is on a same side of the satellite link as the second terminal;

an identification module configured to determine that alternative content that is substantially the same as the first content is accessible to the first node from a third node via a communications path that does not include the satellite link, the third node being different from the second node; and

a providing module configured to obtain the alternative content from the third node via the communications path and to provide the alternative content to the first node.

15. The terminal of claim 14 , wherein the providing module is further configured to:

obtain second content over the communications path; and

generate the alternative content from the second content and the side information.

16. A satellite communications system comprising:

a first terminal;

a second terminal; and

a satellite link connecting the first terminal to the second terminal,

wherein the first terminal comprises:

a receiving module configured to receive side information over the satellite link from the second terminal,

an identification module configured to determine from the side information that transmission of first content from a second node over the satellite link to a first node is pending, wherein the first node is on a same side of the satellite link as the first terminal and the second node is on a same side of the satellite link as the second terminal,

a determining module configured to determine that alternative content that is substantially the same as the first content is accessible to the first node via a communications path that does not include the satellite link, and

a providing module configured to obtain the alternative content and provide the alternative content to the first node; and

wherein the second terminal comprises a transmitting module configured to transmit the side information over the satellite link to the first terminal.

17. The satellite communications system of claim 16 , wherein the transmitting module of the second terminal is further configured to transmit the side information without including any part of the first content in the transmission of the side information.

18. The satellite communications system of claim 16 , wherein the transmitting module of the second terminal is further configured to:

start transmitting the first content over the satellite link to the first terminal, and

upon receiving over the satellite link from the first terminal an indication that the alternative content is accessible to the first node via the communications path, stop the transmission of the first content over the satellite link to the first terminal.

19. The satellite communications system of claim 18 , wherein the determining module of the first terminal is further configured, upon determining that the alternative content is accessible to the first node via the communications path, to send over the satellite link to the transmitting module of the second terminal the indication that the alternative content is accessible to the first node via the communications path.

20. The satellite communications system of claim 16 , wherein the second terminal further comprises a generating module configured to generate the side information from the first content.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third node is not in communication with the second node and not in communication with the second terminal.
