Abstract

The present invention provides a method of the proliferation of pest infestation using a species of Burkholderia. Also provided are natural products derived from a culture of said species and methods of controlling algae and/or arachnids using said natural products.

Claims (20)

1 . A method of modulating the proliferation of pest infestation comprising the steps of:

providing an insecticidal or herbicidal composition comprising: an isolated strain of Burkholderia sp. A 396 (NRRL Accession No. B-50319); n-hexanol; and hexyl paraben formed by incubating isolated strain of Burkholderia sp. A 396 (NRRL Accession No. B-50319) in n-hexanol; and

applying the insecticidal or herbicidal composition to a location where modulation the proliferation of pests is desired an amount of affective to modulate the proliferation of the pest.

2 . The method to claim 1 , wherein said hexyl paraben is present in the amount of about 0.01-5%, and the n-hexanol is present in the amount of about 0.001-10%.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said pest is a nematode.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said pest is a monocot, a dicot, or sedge weeds.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said pest is a monocot.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said pest is a dicot.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said pest is sedge weeds.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the modulation results in a decrease in the proliferation of the pest.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the isolated strain of Burkholderia sp. A 396 (NRRL Accession No. B-50319) is lysed.

10 . A method for obtaining a hexyl paraben composition comprising

providing a composition comprising an isolated strain of Burkholderia sp. A 396 (NRRL Accession No. B-50319);

incubating the composition in n-hexanol for a time and at a temperature sufficient to produce said hexyl paraben composition.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said hexyl paraben is present in the amount of about 0.01-5%.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said n-hexanol is present in the amount of about 0.001-10%.

13 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising the step of adding a carrier to the hexyl paraben composition to form a compostion for modulating the proliferation of a pest infestation.

14 . The method to claim 13 , wherein said hexyl paraben is present in the amount of about 0.01-5%.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said composition is a cell-free supernatant.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said composition comprises lysed Burkholderia sp. A 396 (NRRL Accession No. B-50319).
