Abstract

A glassrun or weatherseal assembly includes a generally rigid channel having first and second legs joined by an interconnecting leg. First and second seal portions extend into a portion of the channel cavity and are adapted to seal against an associated vehicle window. A door frame assembly includes a first or inner door panel and second or outer door panel having end portions spaced apart by a dimension adapted to receive the channel. The channel can be secured to the door frame assembly in a variety of different manners including an adhesive/chemical bond, snap-fit fastener, rivet, clip, adhesive tape, or combinations of one or more of these securing mechanisms.

Claims (19)

1. A weatherseal assembly for a window opening comprising: first and second legs joined by an interconnecting leg to form a generally U-shaped, rigid channel enclosing a window receiving cavity; first and second seal portions secured to the channel and providing first and second lips that extend into a portion of the cavity and are adapted to seal against an associated vehicle window; a door frame assembly including an inner door panel and an outer door panel having end portions spaced apart by a first dimension to receive the first and second legs of the rigid channel therebetween; and a snap-fit fastener for securing the channel to the door frame assembly by attaching the interconnecting leg to the door panel assembly, wherein the inner door panel includes a depression spaced a second dimension from a remainder of the inner door panel to accommodate the snap-fit fastener between the depression and the remainder of the inner door panel.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the securing mechanism includes a rivet for attaching the channel to the door frame assembly.

3. The assembly of claim 2 wherein the rivet attaches the interconnecting leg to the outer door panel.

4. The assembly of claim 3 wherein the rivet attaches the second leg to the inner door panel.

5. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the securing mechanism further includes a rivet attaching the second leg to the inner door panel.

6. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the snap-fit fastener attaches the interconnecting leg to the inner and outer door panels.

7. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the rigid channel includes a notched portion formed along a radiused region of the assembly wherein the notched portion allows bending along a radius.

8. The assembly of claim 7 further comprising a reinforcement member interconnecting portions of the rigid channel on opposite sides of the notched portion.

9. The assembly of claim 8 further comprising securing opposite ends of the reinforcement member to the rigid channel at regions along opposite ends of the notched portion.

10. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the snap-fit fastener includes first and second arms that extend from the rigid channel.

11. The assembly of claim 10 wherein the first and second arms include tapering regions that facilitate insertion through an opening in the depression of the inner door panel.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein the arms include undercut shoulders spaced from terminal ends of the tapered arms so that once the tapering regions are pushed through the opening, the arms snap outwardly and the undercut shoulders prevent inadvertent removal of the channel from the door panel.

13. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the first and second arms extend from the rigid channel less than the second dimension “d”.

14. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the snap-fit fastener is located on a surface of the interconnecting leg of the rigid channel that faces away from the window receiving cavity.

15. The assembly of claim 14 wherein the snap-fit fastener is integrally joined as a co-extruded component on the rigid channel surface.

16. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the seal lips extend from the first and second legs of the rigid channel, respectively, the first seal lip interconnected to the first leg only at a location spaced inwardly from a terminal end of the first leg.

17. The assembly of claim 16 wherein the first seal lip abuttingly engages the terminal end of the first leg.

18. The assembly of claim 16 wherein the second seal lip is interconnected to the second leg only at a terminal end of the second leg.

19. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the second seal lip is interconnected to the second leg only at a terminal end of the second leg.
