Abstract

A polyurethane coating for a golf ball that is based on polyol mixture containing acrylic polyol and BEPD based caprolcatone polyol is disclosed herein. The polyurethane coating comprises a part A component and a part B component, with the part A component comprising an acrylic polyol, a BEPD polyol, a 3-Oxazolidineethanol, a fluorosurfactant, a hindered amine light stabilizer, a UV-absorber, an optical brightener, a dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst, and an organic solvent, and the part B component comprising an aliphatic polyisocyanate and an organic solvent.

Claims (35)

1. A golf ball comprising:

a core;

a cover layer disposed over the core;

and a coating disposed over the cover layer, the coating comprising a part A component and a part B component, the part A component comprises an acrylic polyol, a BEPD polyol, a 3-Oxazolidineethanol, a fluorosurfactant, a hindered amine light stabilizer, a UV-absorber, an optical brightener, a dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst, and an organic solvent, the part B component comprises an aliphatic polyisocyanate, and an organic solvent.

The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein the acrylic polyol ranges from 10% to 60% weight percent of the part A component, the BEPD polyol ranges from 10% to 60% weight percent of the part A component, the 3-Oxazolidineethanol ranges from 5% to 20% weight percent of the part A component, the fluorosurfactant ranges from 0.1% to 1.5% weight percent of the part A component, the hindered amine light stabilizer ranges from 0.1% to 3% weight percent of the part A component, the UV-absorber ranges from 0.1% to 3% weight percent of the part A component, the optical brightener ranges from 0.1% to 2% weight percent of the part A component, the dibutyltin dilaurate catalyst ranges from 0.1% to 3% weight percent of the part A component, the organic solvent ranges from 5% to 70% weight percent of the part A component, the aliphatic polyisocyanate ranges from 20% to 100% weight percent of the part B component, and the organic solvent ranges from 0% to 80% weight percent of the part B component.

3. The golf ball according to claim 1 wherein the aliphatic polyisocyanate is at least one of a HDI trimer, a HDI dimer, or a HDI biuret.

4. The golf ball according to claim 1 further comprising:

an inner mantle layer disposed over the core, the inner mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.040 inch, the inner mantle layer composed of an ionomer material, the inner mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 65 to 71;

an outer mantle layer disposed over the inner mantle layer, the outer mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.070 inch to 0.090 inch, the outer mantle layer composed of a block copolymer material;

wherein the cover layer has a lower Shore D hardness than the outer mantle layer, the outer mantle layer has a higher Shore D hardness than the inner mantle layer, the outer core has a higher Shore D harness than the inner mantle layer and the inner core.

5. The golf ball according to claim 1 further comprising:

an inner mantle layer disposed over the core, the inner mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.090 inch, the inner mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 30 to 50;

an outer mantle layer disposed over the inner mantle layer, the outer mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.070 inch, the outer mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 50 to 71, wherein the inner mantle is thicker than the outer mantle and the outer mantle is harder than the inner mantle;

wherein the cover layer has a Shore D hardness less than the hardness of the outer mantle layer; and

wherein the cover layer has a lower Shore D hardness than the outer mantle layer, the outer mantle layer has a higher Shore D hardness than the inner mantle layer, the outer core has a higher Shore D harness than the inner mantle layer and the inner core.

6. The golf ball according to claim 1 further comprising:

an inner mantle layer disposed over the core, the inner mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.070 inch to 0.090 inch, the inner mantle layer composed of an ionomer material, the inner mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 36 to 44;

an outer mantle layer disposed over the inner mantle layer, the outer mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.040 inch, the outer mantle layer composed of an ionomer material, the outer mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 65 to 71;

wherein the cover layer is disposed over the outer mantle layer, the cover layer has a thickness ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.040 inch, the cover composed of a thermoplastic polyurethane material, the cover layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 40 to 50, and the on cover Shore D hardness less than 56; and

wherein the cover layer has a lower Shore D hardness than the outer mantle layer, the outer mantle layer has a higher Shore D hardness than the inner mantle layer, the outer core has a higher Shore D harness than the inner mantle layer and the inner core.

7. The golf ball according to claim 6 wherein the core comprises an inner core and outer core.

8. The golf ball according to claim 1 further comprising:

an inner mantle layer disposed over the core, the inner mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the inner mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 30 to 40, the inner mantle layer composed of a composed of an ionomer material;

a first center mantle layer disposed over the inner mantle layer, the first center mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the first center mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 40 to 55, the first center mantle layer composed of a fully neutralized polymer material;

a second center mantle layer disposed over the second center mantle layer, the second center mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the second center mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 45 to 55, the second center mantle layer composed of a fully neutralized polymer material; and

an outer mantle layer disposed over the second center mantle layer, the outer mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the outer mantle layer composed of a composed of an ionomer material, the outer mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 60 to 75;

wherein the cover layer is disposed over the outer mantle layer, the cover layer has a thickness ranging from 0.025 inch to 0.040 inch, the cover layer is composed of a thermoplastic polyurethane material, the cover layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 40 to 50, and the on cover Shore D hardness less than 56.

9. The golf ball according to claim 1 further comprising:

an inner mantle layer disposed over the core, the inner mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the inner mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 30 to 40, the inner mantle layer composed of an ionomer material;

a first center mantle layer disposed over the inner mantle layer, the first center mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the first center mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 40 to 55, the first center mantle layer composed of a fully neutralized polymer material;

a second center mantle layer disposed over the second center mantle layer, the second center mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the second center mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 45 to 55, the second center mantle layer composed of a fully neutralized polymer material; and

an outer mantle layer disposed over the second center mantle layer, the outer mantle layer having a thickness ranging from 0.030 inch to 0.050 inch, the outer mantle layer composed of a blend of ionomers, the outer mantle layer material having a plaque Shore D hardness ranging from 60 to 75;

wherein the core has a diameter ranging from 1.19 inch to 1.40 inches.

10. The golf ball according to claim 9 wherein, in relation to Shore D hardness, the outer mantle layer is harder than the cover layer, the first center mantle layer is harder than the second center mantle layer, and the inner mantle layer is harder than a surface hardness of the core.

11. The golf ball according to claim 9 wherein each of the mantle layers has a density greater than an adjacent layer nearest the core.
