Abstract

Disclosed is a satellite communication system that allocates bandwidth to maximize the capacity of the communication system while providing service to geographical areas having different demands. A smaller portion of the frequency spectrum can be allocated for subscriber beams that supply service to low demand areas. A larger portion of the frequency spectrum can be provided to subscriber beams that provide access to high demand areas. Allocation of bandwidth can be determined by the amount of demand in low demand areas versus the amount of demand in high demand areas. High demand gateways are physically located in low demand subscriber beams, while low demand gateways are physically located in high demand subscriber beams, which prevents interference.

Claims (44)

1. A multi-beam satellite for providing satellite communication services to a service area via a system bandwidth, comprising:

one or more subscriber beam antennas to communicate with a first plurality of subscribers in a first subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more first subscriber beams and with a second plurality of subscribers in a second subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more second subscriber beams, the one or more first subscriber beams using a first portion of the system bandwidth and the one or more second subscriber beams using a second portion of the system bandwidth; and

one or more gateway beam antennas to communicate first information with a first gateway via a first gateway beam and second information with a second gateway via a second gateway beam, the first gateway being located within the second subscriber beam coverage area and the second gateway being located within the first subscriber beam coverage area, wherein the first gateway beam uses a third portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with the second portion of the system bandwidth and the second gateway beam uses a fourth portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with the first portion of the system bandwidth,

wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth used by the one or more first subscriber beams overlaps at least partially with the third portion of the system bandwidth used by the first gateway beam, and wherein the second portion of the system bandwidth used by the one or more second subscriber beams overlaps at least partially with the fourth portion of the system bandwidth used by the second gateway beam.

2. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the second portion of the system bandwidth, and the third portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fourth portion of the system bandwidth.

The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth is divided into a first plurality of colors and each of a first subset of the one or more subscriber beam antennas communicates via a respective one of the one or more first subscriber beams using one of the first plurality of colors.

The multi-beam satellite of claim 3 , wherein the second portion of the system bandwidth is divided into a second plurality of colors and each of a second subset of the one or more subscriber beam antennas communicates via a respective one of the one or more second subscriber beams using one of the second plurality of colors, and wherein each of the second plurality of colors has a different bandwidth than each of the first plurality of colors.

5. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein:

the one or more subscriber beam antennas communicate with a third plurality of subscribers in a third subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more third subscriber beams, the one or more third subscriber beams using a fifth portion of the system bandwidth;

the one or more gateway beam antennas communicate third information with a third gateway via a third gateway beam, the third gateway being located within one of the first subscriber beam coverage area or the second subscriber beam coverage area and the third gateway beam using a sixth portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with a respective portion of the system bandwidth used by subscriber beams for the one of the first subscriber beam coverage area or the second subscriber beam coverage area.

The multi-beam satellite of claim 5 , wherein the fifth portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the second portion of the system bandwidth and the first portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fifth portion of the system bandwidth, and wherein the sixth portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fourth portion of the system bandwidth and the third portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the sixth portion of the system bandwidth.

7. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises one or more contiguous frequency bands.

8. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises a plurality of non-contiguous frequency bands.

9. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises multiple polarizations.

10. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises contiguous portions of the system bandwidth.

11. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises non-contiguous portions of the system bandwidth.

12. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises multiple polarizations.

13. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion and the second portion comprise substantially all of the system bandwidth.

14. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth and the third portion of the system bandwidth are a same portion of the system bandwidth.

15. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein a first ratio between the first subscriber beam coverage area and the second subscriber beam coverage area is different than a second ratio between the first portion of the system bandwidth and the second portion of the system bandwidth.

16. The multi-beam satellite of claim 1 , wherein a first ratio between a number of the one or more first subscriber beams and a number of the one or more second subscriber beams is different than a second ratio between the first portion of the system bandwidth and the second portion of the system bandwidth.

17. A method in a multi-beam satellite for providing satellite communication services to a service area via a system bandwidth, the method comprising:

communicating with a first plurality of subscribers in a first subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more first subscriber beams, the one or more first subscriber beams using a first portion of the system bandwidth;

communicating with a second plurality of subscribers in a second subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more second subscriber beams, the one or more second subscriber beams using a second portion of the system bandwidth;

communicating first information with a first gateway via a first gateway beam, the first gateway being located within the second subscriber beam coverage area and the first gateway beam using a third portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with the second portion of the system bandwidth; and

communicating second information with a second gateway via a second gateway beam, the second gateway being located within the first subscriber beam coverage area and the second gateway beam using a fourth portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with the first portion of the system bandwidth,

wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth used by the one or more first subscriber beams overlaps at least partially with the third portion of the system bandwidth used by the first gateway beam, and wherein the second portion of the system bandwidth used by the one or more second subscriber beams overlaps at least partially with the fourth portion of the system bandwidth used by the second gateway beam.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the second portion of the system bandwidth, and the third portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fourth portion of the system bandwidth.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth is divided into a first plurality of colors and each of the one or more first subscriber beams uses one of the first plurality of colors.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the second portion of the system bandwidth is divided into a second plurality of colors and each of the one or more second subscriber beams uses one of the second plurality of colors, and wherein each of the second plurality of colors has a different bandwidth than each of the first plurality of colors.

21. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

communicating with a third plurality of subscribers in a third subscriber beam coverage area of the service area via one or more third subscriber beams, the one or more third subscriber beams using a fifth portion of the system bandwidth;

communicating third information with a third gateway via a third gateway beam, the third gateway being located within one of the first subscriber beam coverage area or the second subscriber beam coverage area and the third gateway beam using a sixth portion of the system bandwidth that is non-overlapping with a respective portion of the system bandwidth used by subscriber beams for the one of the first subscriber beam coverage area or the second subscriber beam coverage area.

The method of claim 21 , wherein the fifth portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the second portion of the system bandwidth and the first portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fifth portion of the system bandwidth, and wherein the sixth portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the fourth portion of the system bandwidth and the third portion of the system bandwidth is greater than the sixth portion of the system bandwidth.

23. The method of claim 17 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises one or more contiguous frequency bands.

24. The method of claim 17 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises a plurality of non-contiguous frequency bands.

25. The method of claim 17 , wherein the system bandwidth comprises multiple polarizations.

26. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises contiguous portions of the system bandwidth.

27. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises non-contiguous portions of the system bandwidth.

28. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth comprises multiple polarizations.

29. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion and the second portion comprise substantially all of the system bandwidth.

30. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the system bandwidth and the third portion of the system bandwidth are a same portion of the system bandwidth.

31. The method of claim 17 , wherein a first ratio between the first subscriber beam coverage area and the second subscriber beam coverage area is different than a second ratio between the first portion of the system bandwidth and the second portion of the system bandwidth.

32. The method of claim 17 , wherein a first ratio between a number of the one or more first subscriber beams and a number of the one or more second subscriber beams is different than a second ratio between the first portion of the system bandwidth and the second portion of the system bandwidth.
