Abstract

Methods and systems for alerting a vehicle driver and/or a passenger via wireless communications. One or more conditions with respect to a vehicle are monitored. A change in the condition(s) is detected and a signal automatically and wirelessly transmitted to a computing device, wherein the signal is indicative of the change in condition(s). The driver and/or the passenger is then alerted to the change in condition(s) in response to transmitting the signal to the computing device (e.g., a tablet computing device, smartphone, smartwatch, other wearable device, in-vehicle system, etc.) associated with the driver and/or the vehicle passenger.

Claims (47)

1. A method for alerting a vehicle passenger via wireless communications, the method being performed by one or more processors and comprising:

monitoring at least one condition external to a vehicle while the vehicle is in operation and a passenger in the vehicle is located in a passenger seat of the vehicle and the vehicle is temporarily stopped;

detecting a change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle while monitoring the at least one condition when the vehicle is temporarily stopped;

transmitting a signal wirelessly to a computing device, the signal being indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle; and

alerting the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein alerting the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device comprises:

providing an audible alert via a speaker associated with the computing device, the audible alert indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein alerting the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device comprises:

establishing a wireless connection between the computing device and a radio system of the vehicle; and

providing an audible alert from the computing device indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle, wherein the audible alert is broadcast via the radio system after establishing the wireless connection between the computing device and the radio system of the vehicle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one condition of a traffic light, and wherein the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle comprises a change in the at least one condition of the traffic light.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition comprises a movement of a pedestrian external to the vehicle.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device comprises at least one of a smartphone or a tablet computing device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one condition external to the vehicle comprises a stop light condition, and wherein the change in the at least one condition comprises a change from one stop light color to another stop light color.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein alerting the passenger of the change in the at least one condition after transmission of the signal to the computing device, comprises:

establishing a wireless connection between the computing device and a radio system of the vehicle; and

providing an audible alert from the computing device indicative of the change in the at least one condition via the radio system.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring the at least one condition external to the vehicle while the vehicle is in operation and the passenger of the vehicle is located in the passenger seat of the vehicle comprises monitoring the at least one condition with a camera that communicates with the computing device.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

tracking and recording, in a memory of a computing system, data indicative of a number of times the passenger is alerted to the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle while the vehicle is temporarily stopped.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

periodically retrieving the data from the memory; and

transmitting the data wirelessly from the computing system to a central repository for storage and analysis.

12. An autonomous vehicle that provides alerts to a passenger of the autonomous vehicle via wireless communications, the autonomous vehicle comprising:

a passenger compartment with a passenger seat;

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions the, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:

monitor at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle while the autonomous vehicle is in operation and a passenger in the autonomous vehicle is located in the passenger seat of the autonomous vehicle and the autonomous vehicle is temporarily stopped;

detect a change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle while monitoring the at least one condition when the autonomous vehicle is temporarily stopped;

transmit a signal wirelessly to a computing device, the signal being indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle; and

alert the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device.

13. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the executed instructions cause the at least one processor to alert the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device by providing an audible alert via a speaker associated with the computing device, the audible alert indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle.

14. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the executed instructions cause the at least one processor to alert the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device by:

establishing a wireless connection between the computing device and a radio system of the autonomous vehicle; and

providing an audible alert from the computing device indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle, wherein the audible alert is broadcast via the radio system after establishing the wireless connection between the computing device and the radio system of the autonomous vehicle.

15. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the at least one condition comprises at least one condition of a traffic light, and wherein the change in the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle comprises a change in the at least one condition of the traffic light.

16. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the at least one condition comprises a movement of a pedestrian external to the autonomous vehicle.

17. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the computing device comprises at least one of a smartphone or a tablet computing device.

18. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the at least one condition external to the autonomous vehicle comprises a stop light condition, and wherein the change in the at least one condition comprises a change from one stop light color to another stop light color.

19. The autonomous vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the executed instructions cause the at least one processor to monitor the condition external to the autonomous vehicle while the autonomous vehicle is in operation and the passenger of the autonomous vehicle is located in the passenger seat of the autonomous vehicle by monitoring the at least one condition with a camera that communicates with the computing device.

20. A system for alerting a passenger of a vehicle via wireless communications, comprising:

at least one processor; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:

monitor at least one condition external to the vehicle while the vehicle is in operation and a passenger in the vehicle is located in a passenger seat of the vehicle and the vehicle is temporarily stopped;

detect a change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle while monitoring the at least one condition when the vehicle is temporarily stopped;

transmit a signal wirelessly to a computing device, the signal being indicative of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle; and

alert the passenger of the change in the at least one condition external to the vehicle after transmission of the signal to the computing device.
