Abstract

A recreational sport boat includes a hull, having starboard and port sides and a transom, and a pair of wake-modifying devices positioned aft of the transom. One of the wake-modifying devices is positioned on a port side of the boat's centerline and another of the wake-modifying devices is positioned on a starboard side of the boat's centerline. Each wake-modifying device includes a plate-like member and at least one downturned surface at a trailing portion of the plate-like member. Each wake-modifying device is pivotable between a non-deployed position and a deployed position about a pivot axis that is horizontal or inclined no more than about 35° from horizontal. When a wake-modifying device is in the deployed position, the downturned surface is lower than it is in the non-deployed position so as to be able to modify the boat's wake.

Claims (28)

1. A wake-modifying device configured to generate a surf wake behind a boat, the wake-modifying device comprising:

a plate-like member adapted to be pivotally mounted aft of a transom of the boat on either a port side of the boat's centerline or a starboard side of the boat's centerline; and

at least two downturned surfaces at a trailing portion of the plate-like member, the two downturned surfaces being at an obtuse angle relative to each other.

2. The wake-modifying device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the downturned surfaces is at a trailing edge of the plate-like member.

3. The wake-modifying device of claim 1 , wherein an angle between at least one of the downturned surfaces and a lower surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is between about 120° to about 135°.

4. The wake-modifying device of claim 1 , wherein the obtuse angle is between about 135° to about 150°.

5. The wake-modifying device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one upturned surface at an outboard portion of the plate-like member.

6. The wake-modifying device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one fin attached to a lower surface of the plate-like member.

7. A wake-modifying device configured to generate a surf wake behind a boat, the wake-modifying device comprising:

a plate-like member adapted to be pivotally mounted aft of a transom of the boat on either a port side of the boat's centerline or a starboard side of the boat's centerline;

a first downturned surface at an inboard portion of the plate-like member, the first downturned surface lying in a first plane; and

a second downturned surface located entirely within a trailing portion of the plate-like member, the second downturned surface lying in a second plane which intersects the first plane.

8. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein the second downturned surface is at a trailing edge of the plate-like member.

9. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein the first downturned surface is at a trailing portion of the plate-like member.

10. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein the first plane intersects a leading edge of the plate-like member.

11. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein the second plane is substantially parallel to a leading edge of the plate-like member.

12. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein the second plane is substantially perpendicular to the first plane.

13. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , wherein an angle between at least one of first and second downturned surface and a lower surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is between about 120° to about 135°.

14. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , further comprising at least one upturned surface at an outboard portion of the plate-like member.

15. The wake-modifying device of claim 7 , further comprising at least one fin attached to a lower surface of the plate-like member.

16. A wake-modifying device configured to generate a surf wake behind a boat, the wake-modifying device comprising:

a plate-like member adapted to be pivotally mounted aft of a transom of the boat on either a port side of the boat's centerline or a starboard side of the boat's centerline;

at least one downturned surface at a trailing portion of the plate-like member; and

a fin attached to a lower surface of the plate-like member, the fin being angled obliquely relative to a leading edge of the plate-like member.

17. The wake-modifying device of claim 16 , wherein the fin is angled between about 15° and about 75° relative to the leading edge of the plate-like member.

18. The wake-modifying device of claim 16 , wherein an angle between the fin and a lower surface of a central portion of the plate-like member is about 90°.

19. The wake-modifying device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one wake-modifying device includes at least two fins attached to the lower surface of the plate-like member, and the fins are parallel to each other.

20. The wake-modifying device of claim 16 , further comprising at least one upturned surface at an outboard portion of the plate-like member.
