Abstract

Some embodiments provide a hosting system for provisioning and managing servers (e.g., virtual servers, dedicated servers) in a switched network. In some embodiments, the hosting system receives a configuration for one or more servers for a particular entity (e.g., customer, user). The hosting system then identifies a grid identity and a set of virtual local area network (VLAN) identities for the particular entity. The hosting system then deploys the configuration for the one or more servers on one or more grid-specific hardware nodes using the grid identity and the set of VLAN identities. In some embodiments, the hosting system identifies a local VLAN identity that is associated with a grid-independent hardware node, where a grid-independent hardware node and grid-specific hardware nodes may co-exist in the same switched network.

Claims (53)

1. A system for deploying servers in a network, comprising:

a memory; and

one or more processors coupled to the memory, wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

receive a configuration for a first set of servers from an entity to be deployed on a grid-independent node, the grid-independent node configured to associate with two or more grids;

identify a grid identity and a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity associated with the entity and a second set of servers on a grid-dependent node;

identify a local second VLAN identity associated with the entity and the grid-independent node;

map a combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity to the identified local second VLAN identity; and

based on the mapping, deploy the configuration for the first set of servers on the grid-independent node, wherein the local second VLAN identity is associated with a top-of-rack (TOR) switch that routes a packet to or from the grid-independent node;

wherein the local second VLAN identity is translated with the grid identity and the first VLAN identity in a header of the packet.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first VLAN identity comprises a public VLAN identity, and wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: identify a private VLAN identity associated with the entity.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: based on the grid identity and the first VLAN identity, provide the second set of servers with access to an Internet network.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: define a broadcast domain for the first set of servers and the second set of servers.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein within the broadcast domain, servers of the first set of servers and the second set of servers to communicate with one another.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein to identify the local second VLAN identity, the one or more processors are configured to:

determine that a local VLAN identity is not already mapped to the combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity; and

assign the local second VLAN identity to the combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein to identify the local second VLAN identity, the one or more processors are further configured to: mark the local second VLAN identity as unavailable after assigning the local second VLAN identity to the combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the configuration specifies at least one of:

an operating system, a storage size, an amount of memory, a processor type, or a location of datacenter for a server of the first set of servers.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein to identify the grid identity and the first VLAN identity, the one or more processors are configured to:

determine that a grid identity has not been assigned to the entity;

assign the grid identity to the entity;

determine that a VLAN identity has not been assigned to the entity; and

assign the first VLAN identity to the entity.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein to identify the grid identity and the first VLAN identity, the one or more processors are further configured to:

mark the first VLAN identity as unavailable after assigning the first VLAN identity to the entity.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the grid identity and the first VLAN identity are used in a first VLAN protocol for communicating with the second set of servers on the grid-dependent node and wherein the local second VLAN identity is used in a second VLAN protocol for communicating with the grid-independent node.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, performs operations for deploying virtual servers in a network, the operations comprising

receiving a configuration for a first set of servers from an entity to be deployed on a grid-independent node, the grid-independent node configured to associate with two or more grids;

identifying a grid identity and a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity associated with the entity and a second set of servers on a grid-dependent node;

identifying a local second VLAN identity associated with the entity and the grid-independent node;

mapping a combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity to the identified local second VLAN identity; and

based on the mapping, deploying the configuration for the first set of servers on the grid-independent node, wherein the local second VLAN identity is associated with a top-of-rack (TOR) switch that routes a packet to or from the grid-independent node

wherein the local second VLAN identity is translated with the grid identity and the first VLAN identity in a header of the packet.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the first VLAN identity comprises a public VLAN identity, the operations further comprise: identifying a private VLAN identity associated with the entity.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise: defining a broadcast domain for the first set of servers and the second set of servers.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the grid identity and the first VLAN identity are used in a first VLAN protocol for communicating with the second set of servers on the grid-dependent node and wherein the local second VLAN identity are used in a second VLAN protocol for communicating with the grid-independent node.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the identifying the local second VLAN identity operation comprises:

determining that a local VLAN identity is not already mapped to the combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity; and

assigning a new local VLAN identity to the combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the local second VLAN identity in a header of the packet, and is translated with the grid identity and the first VLAN identity.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the identifying the grid identity and the first VLAN identity operation comprises:

determining that a grid identity has not been assigned to the entity;

assigning the grid identity to the entity;

determining that a VLAN identity has not been assigned to the entity; and

assigning the first VLAN identity to the entity.

19. A method for deploying virtual servers in a network, comprising

receiving a configuration for a first set of servers from an entity to be deployed on a grid-independent node;

identifying a grid identity and a first Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) identity associated with the entity and a second set of servers on a grid-dependent node, the grid-independent node configured to associate with two or more grids;

identifying a local second VLAN identity associated with the entity and the grid-independent node;

mapping a combination of the grid identity and the first VLAN identity to the identified local second VLAN identity; and

based on the mapping, deploying the configuration for the first set of servers on the grid-independent node, wherein the local second VLAN identity is associated with a top-of-rack (TOR) switch that routes a packet to or from the grid-independent node;

wherein the local second VLAN identity is translated with the grid identity and the first VLAN identity in a header of the packet.
