Abstract

A method for operating a sensing system includes receiving, from a processing device, control information for configuring a capacitance sensing circuit, configuring the capacitance sensing circuit with the control information in response to receiving the control information, and controlling power consumption of the processing device based on the control information and based on a capacitance measured by the capacitance sensing circuit.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an application of a power supply at the capacitance sensing circuit; and

in response to receiving the application of the power supply, causing the processing device to transmit the control information.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control information configures the capacitance sensing circuit to control power consumption of the processing device by connecting or disconnecting the power supply and the processing device in response to one or more events.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the power consumption of the processing device further comprises controlling a switch circuit to connect the power supply to the processing device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the power consumption of the processing device further comprises connecting a power supply to the processing device responsive to a timer event.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the power consumption of the processing device comprises causing the processing device to change between a low-power mode and a wake mode.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting a presence of a touch object proximate to the touch button by measuring a capacitance of a touch button coupled with the capacitance sensing circuit; and

in response to detecting the presence of the touch object, connecting the power supply to the processing device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

coupling a plurality of touch buttons to form a composite button; and

detecting a presence of a touch object proximate to the composite button by measuring the capacitance from the composite button.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the capacitance sensing circuit is integrated with the processing device in a single chip.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the processing device is located in a first integrated circuit chip and the capacitance sensing circuit is located in a second integrated circuit chip separate from the first integrated circuit chip.

11. An apparatus, comprising:

a control interface of a capacitance sensing circuit configured to receive, from a processing device, control information for configuring the capacitance sensing circuit; and

a control circuit in the capacitance sensing circuit coupled with the control interface and configured to:

in response to receiving the control information by the control interface, configure the capacitance sensing circuit based on the received control information and decrease power consumption by the processing device, and

control power consumption of the processing device based on the control information and based on a capacitance measured by the capacitance sensing circuit.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a power supply configured to power the capacitance sensing circuit, wherein controlling the power consumption of the processing device further comprises controlling a switch circuit to connect the power supply with the processing device.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the control information configures the capacitance sensing circuit to control the power consumption of the processing device in response to one or more events, and wherein the control interface comprises a serial interface.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the capacitance sensing circuit is configured to detect a presence of a touch object proximate to a touch button by measuring a capacitance of the touch button, and wherein the control circuit is configured to control the power consumption of the processing device in response to detecting the presence of the touch object.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit further comprises an interrupt line, and wherein the control circuit is configured to control the power consumption of the processing device by transmitting an interrupt signal via the interrupt line to cause the processing device to change between a low-power mode and a wake mode.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the capacitance sensing circuit further comprises a plurality of button switches configured to simultaneously connect the capacitance sensing circuit to a plurality of touch buttons to form a composite button, and wherein the capacitance sensing circuit is further configured to measure a capacitance of the composite button.
