Abstract

In an embodiment, a battery module compartment is configured for deployment with one or more other battery module compartments within a battery module mounting area of an energy storage system. The battery module compartment includes aa plurality of walls defining an interior space configured to fit a battery module, and an insertion-side through which the battery module is configured to be inserted or removed. The insertion-side is configured to be closed via an insertion-side cover to form part of a battery housing with a closed compartment profile that is characterized by the battery module compartment being sealed from at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing. Claims (55)

1 . A battery module compartment configured for deployment with one or more other battery module compartments within a battery module mounting area of an energy storage system, comprising:

a plurality of walls defining an interior space configured to fit a battery module; and

an insertion-side through which the battery module is configured to be inserted into the interior space of the battery module compartment and/or removed from the interior space of the battery module compartment,

wherein the insertion-side is configured to be closed via an insertion-side cover to form part of a battery housing with a closed compartment profile that is characterized by the battery module compartment being sealed from at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing.

2 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one electrical interface configured to be coupled to the battery module.

3 . The battery module compartment of claim 2 , wherein the at least one electrical interface includes at least one connector that is inserted into the battery module compartment via at least one hole.

4 . The battery module compartment of claim 3 , wherein the at least one connector is configured to be sealed via at least one O-ring in an axial or a radial direction, at least one rubber gasket, at least one sealing adhesive or any combination thereof.

5 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side cover includes a sealing substance.

6 . The battery module compartment of claim 5 , wherein the sealing substance includes dispensed foam, rubber, a sealing adhesive or any combination thereof.

7 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 ,

wherein the insertion-side cover includes holes through which input and output cooling tube plug connections are inserted,

wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are coupled to cooling tubes that connect to an external cooling system and are configured to cool a cooling plate inside the battery module, and

wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are configured to be sealed to contribute to the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment.

8 . The battery module compartment of claim 7 , wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are configured to be sealed via O-rings.

9 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to a lateral side of the battery module compartment.

10 . The battery module compartment of claim 9 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to an exterior-facing lateral side of the battery module compartment.

11 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to be laterally inserted into the battery module compartment and/or laterally removed from the battery module compartment.

The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module compartment is attached to a hinge that permits the battery module compartment to be configured in a closed state where insertion and/or removal of the battery module is not permitted or an open state where the battery module compartment is configured to rotate downwards to permit insertion and/or removal of the battery module via the insertion-side.

13 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to a top-side of the battery module compartment or a bottom-side of the battery module compartment.

14 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side cover is configured to individually cover the battery module compartment.

The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side cover is configured to cover a group of battery module compartments, such that the group of battery module compartments is sealed from one or more battery module compartments outside of the group of battery module compartments.

16 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module compartment is paired with a laterally adjacent battery module compartment.

17 . The battery module compartment of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of walls includes an interior firewall that separates the battery module compartment from the laterally adjacent battery module compartment.

18 . The battery module compartment of claim 17 , wherein the laterally adjacent battery module compartment pair is a battery module compartment chamber that is independently constructed from one or more other battery module compartment chambers within the battery module mounting area.

19 . The battery module compartment of claim 18 , wherein the battery module compartment chamber is secured to one or more adjacent battery module compartment chambers during assembly of the battery module mounting area.

20 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module compartment is produced via sheet metal construction or extruded or die-cast aluminum construction.

21 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the insertion-side includes a flange and a set of integrated fixation points for securing the insertion-side cover to the battery module compartment.

22 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is a cylindrical battery cell or a pouch or prismatic battery cell.

23 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is integrated with the insertion-side cover prior to insertion into the interior space of the battery module compartment.

24 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module and the insertion-side cover are separate components that are not integrated prior to insertion into the interior space of the battery module compartment.

25 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the battery module mounting area is part of a vehicle floor of an electric vehicle.

26 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing is at least liquid-tight.

27 . The battery module compartment of claim 26 , wherein the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing is liquid tight and gas-tight with respect to one or more types of gas.

28 . The battery module compartment of claim 1 , wherein the energy storage system stores power that is configured for distribution to an electric vehicle, a home power system, an industrial or commercial power system or a public power system.

29 . A battery module arrangement configured for deployment with respect to a battery module compartment within a battery module mounting area of an energy storage system, comprising:

a battery module configured to be inserted into and/or removed from an interior space of the battery module compartment via an insertion-side of the battery module compartment; and

an insertion-side cover configured to be closed over the insertion-side of the battery module compartment to form part of a battery housing with a closed compartment profile that is characterized by the battery module compartment being sealed from at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing.

30 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the insertion-side cover includes a sealing substance.

31 . The battery module arrangement of claim 30 , wherein the sealing substance includes dispensed foam, rubber, a sealing adhesive or any combination thereof.

32 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 ,

wherein the insertion-side cover includes holes through which input and output cooling tube plug connections are inserted,

wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are coupled to cooling tubes that connect to an external cooling system and are configured to cool a cooling plate inside the battery module, and

wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are configured to be sealed to contribute to the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment.

33 . The battery module arrangement of claim 32 , wherein the input and output cooling tube plug connections are configured to be sealed via O-rings.

34 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to a lateral side of the battery module compartment.

35 . The battery module arrangement of claim 34 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to an exterior-facing lateral side of the battery module compartment.

36 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the insertion-side corresponds to a top-side of the battery module compartment or a bottom-side of the battery module compartment.

37 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the insertion-side cover is configured to individually cover the battery module compartment.

38 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the insertion-side cover is configured to cover a group of battery module compartments, such that the group of battery module compartments is sealed from one or more battery module compartments outside of the group of battery module compartments.

39 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the battery module is integrated with the insertion-side cover prior to insertion into the interior space of the battery module compartment.

40 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the battery module and the insertion-side cover are separate components that are not integrated prior to insertion into the interior space of the battery module compartment.

41 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing is at least liquid-tight.

42 . The battery module arrangement of claim 41 , wherein the seal between the battery module compartment and the at least one other battery module compartment in the battery housing is liquid tight and gas-tight with respect to one or more types of gas.

43 . The battery module arrangement of claim 29 , wherein the energy storage system stores power that is configured for distribution to an electric vehicle, a home power system, an industrial or commercial power system or a public power system.
