Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for Internet protocol low noise block downconverters (IP LNBs) supporting positioning. An IP LNB that is within a satellite reception assembly may determine based on signals received from at least two different sources, location information and corresponding time information for the IP LNB; and may communicate the determined location information and the corresponding time information to a wireless communication device communicatively coupled to the IP LNB. The location information may be configured to enable the wireless communication device to determine its location based on the determined location information and the corresponding time information. The IP LNB may receive the location information of the wireless communication device from that device. The IP LNB may adaptively provide services based on one or more of: its determined location information, the corresponding time information, and the location information of the wireless communication device.

Claims (43)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method, comprising:

in an Internet protocol low noise block downconverter (IP LNB) that is within a satellite reception assembly:

determining based on signals received from at least two different sources, location information and corresponding time information of said IP LNB; and

communicating said determined location information and said corresponding time information to a wireless communication device communicatively coupled to said IP LNB;

wherein said location information is configured to enable said wireless communication device to determine its location based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information.

22 . The method of claim 21 , comprising determining one or both of said location information and said time information of said IP LNB based on global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals.

23 . The method of claim 22 , comprising:

receiving via said satellite reception assembly; and

processing said global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals via said IP LNB.

24 . The method of claim 21 , comprising:

receiving said location information of said wireless communication device from said wireless communication device; and

storing said received location information of said wireless communication device.

25 . The method of claim 21 , comprising:

determining location information of a wireless source device based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information of said IP LNB along with a plurality of other location information and corresponding other time information associated with a plurality of other IP LNB-based assemblies;

wherein:

said plurality of other IP LNB-based assemblies are communicatively coupled to said IP LNB; and

said time information and each of said other time information are determined based on receiving a corresponding signal from said wireless source device.

26 . The method of claim 21 , comprising communicating said determined time information to one or more other IP LNB-based assemblies for accurate timing recovery.

27 . The method of claim of 21 , comprising providing services based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information.

28 . The method of claim 21 , comprising applying one or both of digital rights management (DRM) and conditional access (CA) to content delivery based on said determined location information of said IP LNB.

29 . The method of claim 21 , comprising generating a location map for a region based on said determined location information of said IP LNB along with other location information associated with other IP LNB-based assemblies.

30 . The method of claim 21 , comprising detecting relocation of one or both of said satellite reception assembly and an associated gateway based on said determined location information of said IP LNB.

31 . A system, comprising:

an Internet protocol low noise block downconverter (IP LNB) within a satellite reception assembly, said IP LNB comprising at least one processing circuit for processing data and at least one communication circuit for use in communication of signals, wherein said IP LNB is operable to:

determine based on signals received from at least two different sources, location information and corresponding time information of said IP LNB; and

communicate said determined location information and said corresponding time information to a wireless communication device communicatively coupled to said IP LNB;

wherein said location information is configured to enable said wireless communication device to determine its location based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information.

32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to determine one or both of said location information and said time information of said IP LNB based on global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals.

33 . The system of claim 32 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to process said global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals.

34 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to:

receive said location information of said wireless communication device from said wireless communication device; and

store said received location information of said wireless communication device.

35 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable:

determine location information of a wireless source device based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information of said IP LNB along with a plurality of other location information and a plurality of corresponding other time information associated with a plurality of other IP LNB-based assemblies; and

wherein:

said plurality of other IP LNB-based assemblies are communicatively coupled to said IP LNB; and

said time information and each of said other time information are determined based on receiving a corresponding signal from said wireless source device.

36 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to communicate said determined time information to one or more other IP LNB-based assemblies for accurate timing recovery.

37 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to provide services based on said determined location information and said corresponding time information.

38 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to apply one or both of digital rights management (DRM) and conditional access (CA) to content delivery based on said determined location information of said IP LNB.

39 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to generate a location map for a region based on said determined location information of said IP LNB along with other location information associated with other IP LNB-based assemblies in said region.

40 . The system of claim 31 , wherein said IP LNB is operable to detect relocation of one or both of said satellite reception assembly and an associated gateway based on said determined location information of said IP LNB.
