Abstract

Methods of treating a subject for a cardiac arrhythmia are provided. Aspects of the methods include thoracoscopically producing a cardiac Cox maze III set of lesions in cardiac tissue of the subject in a manner sufficient to treat the subject for the cardiac arrhythmia.

Claims (20)

1. A method of treating a subject for a cardiac arrhythmia, the method comprising thoracoscopically producing by a left thoracoscopic approach a set of cardiac lesions in a manner sufficient to treat the subject for the cardiac arrhythmia.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the set of lesions comprises a lesion in a ganglionic plexus.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the set of lesions is produced by contacting cardiac tissue with an ablation device.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a clamping device.

5. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a radiofrequency device.

6. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a laser energy device.

7. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a microwave energy device.

8. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a thermal energy device.

9. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is an ultrasound device.

10. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the ablation device is a cryoablation device.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cardiac arrhythmia comprises atrial fibrillation.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein thoracoscopically producing comprises making left side thoracoscopic body openings.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the left side thoracoscopic body openings comprise four left side thoracoscopic body openings.

14. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the left side thoracoscopic body openings comprise an opening in the second intercostal space.

15. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the left side thoracoscopic body openings comprise an opening in the third intercostal space medial to the anterior axillary line.

16. A method of treating a subject for a cardiac arrhythmia, the method comprising thoracoscopically producing a set of cardiac lesions in a manner sufficient to treat the subject for the cardiac arrhythmia, wherein the set of lesions comprises a right pulmonary vein encircling ablation line, a left pulmonary vein encircling ablation line, a superior connecting ablation line connecting the right and left pulmonary vein encircling lines, and an inferior connecting ablation line connecting the right and left pulmonary vein encircling lines.

17. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the set of lesions comprises a lesion in a ganglionic plexus.

18. The method according to claim 16 , wherein the set of lesions is produced by contacting cardiac tissue with an ablation device.

19. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the ablation device is a radiofrequency device.

20. The method according to claim 18 , wherein the cardiac arrhythmia comprises atrial fibrillation.
