Abstract

An integrated auto-level and electronic rod reader is disclosed. In one embodiment, the integrated auto-level and electronic rod reader comprises a telescope and an image delivery device integrated with the auto-level which is configured for capturing an image of a standard grade rod visible through the telescope and a crosshair. Logic implemented by a processor automatically recognizes the crosshair, automatically compares the crosshair against a scale of the standard grade rod, and automatically determines an elevation of the standard grade rod based upon the comparing.

Claims (33)

1. An auto-level telescope, comprising:

a housing;

one or more lenses in the housing, wherein the one or more lenses are configured to refract light passing therethrough;

a plurality of prisms in the housing, wherein the plurality prisms are configured to manipulate a path of light passing through the plurality of prisms, wherein the path is manipulated according to a changeable orientation of a first of the plurality of prisms with respect to a second of the plurality of prisms; and

an image delivery device configured to receive light having passed through the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms, to generate an image corresponding to the received light as corrected by the image delivery device by compensating for a lack of an eyepiece, and to transmit the image to an opto-electronic device comprising a receiver configured to receive the image.

2. The auto-level telescope of claim 1 , wherein the image delivery device is removably attached to the housing.

3. The auto-level telescope of claim 2 , wherein the image delivery device is attached to the housing with one or more brackets.

4. The auto-level telescope of claim 2 , further comprising the eyepiece, wherein the eyepiece is removably attached to the housing.

5. The auto-level telescope of claim 4 , wherein the image delivery device is configured to replace the eyepiece once the eyepiece is removed.

6. The auto-level telescope of claim 1 , wherein the image delivery device is configured to modify the image to compensate for an absence of the eyepiece when generating the image.

7. The auto-level telescope of claim 1 , wherein the image delivery device is configured to modify the image by overlaying a crosshair on the image when generating the image.

8. The auto-level telescope of claim 1 , wherein the image delivery device is integrated into the auto-level telescope.

9. The auto-level telescope of claim 1 , further comprising a display configured to display images for a user, wherein a displayed image represents the image generated by the image delivery device.

10. An auto-level telescope, comprising:

a housing;

one or more lenses and a plurality of prisms in the housing, wherein the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms are configured to cooperatively refract light passing therethrough, wherein the plurality of prisms are configured to manipulate a path of light passing through the plurality of prisms, wherein the path is manipulated according to a changeable orientation of a first of the plurality of prisms with respect to a second of the plurality of prisms;

an eyepiece configured to receive the refracted light and to further refract the refracted light for observation by a user; and

an opto-electronic device comprising a receiver configured to receive the refracted light from the eyepiece.

11. The auto-level telescope of claim 10 , wherein the opto-electronic device is configured to automatically determine an elevation of a grade rod based on alpha-numeric characters represented in the refracted image.

12. The auto-level telescope of claim 10 , wherein the eyepiece is removably attached to the housing.

13. The auto-level telescope of claim 10 , further comprising a display configured to display an image for the user, wherein the displayed image represents the received refracted light.

14. An auto-level telescope, comprising:

a housing;

one or more lenses in the housing, wherein the one or more lenses are configured to refract light passing therethrough;

a plurality of prisms in the housing, wherein the plurality of prisms are configured to manipulate a path of light passing through the plurality of prisms, wherein the path is manipulated according to a changeable orientation of a first of the plurality of prisms with respect to a second of the plurality of prisms; and

an optoelectronic device in the housing, wherein the opto-electronic device is configured to receive light having passed through the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms, to electronically process a first portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms, and to pass a second portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms through the opto-electronic device; and

an eyepiece configured to receive the second portion of light from the opto-electronic device and to further refract the second portion of light from the opto-electronic device for observation by a user.

15. The auto-level telescope of claim 14 , wherein the opto-electronic device is configured to automatically determine an elevation of a grade rod based on alpha-numeric characters represented in the first portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms.

16. The auto-level telescope of claim 14 , wherein the eyepiece is removably attached to the housing.

17. The auto-level telescope of claim 14 , wherein the opto-electronic device is removably attached to the housing.

18. The auto-level telescope of claim 14 , wherein the opto-electronic device comprises:

an image capture device configured to store a representation of an image formed by the first portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms; and

an electronic shutter configured to selectively pass the second portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms to the eyepiece and to selectively pass the first portion of the light from the one or more lenses and the plurality of prisms to the image capture device.
