Abstract

An expandable implant includes a top support assembly defining an upper surface configured to engage a first portion of vertebral bone; a bottom support assembly defining a lower surface configured to engage a second portion of vertebral bone; and a control assembly coupled to the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly and configured to control relative movement between the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly between a collapsed position and an expanded position. In the collapsed position, the upper surface is generally parallel to the lower surface, and in the expanded position, a portion of the upper surface extends at an acute angle relative to a portion of the lower surface.

Claims (39)

1. An expandable implant, comprising:

a top support assembly defining an upper surface configured to engage a first portion of vertebral bone;

a bottom support assembly defining a lower surface configured to engage a second portion of vertebral bone;

a control assembly coupled to the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly and configured to control relative movement between the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly between a collapsed position and an expanded position;

wherein in the collapsed position, the upper surface is generally parallel to the lower surface, and wherein in the expanded position, a portion of the upper surface extends at an acute angle relative to a portion of the lower surface;

wherein the control assembly includes:

a first wedge member movably coupled to a second wedge member such that relative movement between the first wedge member and the second wedge member causes relative movement between the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly;

an internally threaded receiver extending through the first wedge member;

a first control member coupled to the second wedge member and including internal threads and external threads, wherein the external threads of the first control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the receiver; and

a second control member coupled to the second wedge member and including external threads, wherein the external threads of the second control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the first control member.

The expandable implant of claim 1 , wherein the top support assembly includes a first portion and a second portion, and the bottom support assembly includes a third portion and a fourth portion, wherein in the collapsed position, the first and second portions are generally aligned and the third and fourth portions are generally aligned, and wherein in the expanded position, the first portion forms an angle with the second portion, and the third portion forms an angle with the fourth portion.

3. The expandable implant of claim 1 , wherein threading of the first control member within the receiver causes linear movement of the top support assembly away from the bottom support assembly.

4. The expandable implant of claim 1 , wherein threading of the second control member within the first control member cause nonlinear movement of a portion of the top support assembly relative to a portion of the bottom support assembly.

5. The expandable implant of claim 1 , wherein the receiver is longitudinally fixed relative to the first wedge member and the first control member is longitudinally movable relative to the receiver and the second wedge member.

6. An expandable implant comprising:

a top support assembly defining an upper surface configured to engage a first portion of vertebral bone;

a bottom support assembly defining a lower surface configured to engage a second portion of vertebral bone;

a first wedge member slidably coupled to the top and bottom support assemblies

a second wedge member slidably coupled to the top and bottom support assemblies; and

a control assembly coupled to the first and second wedge members and configured to control relative movement between the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly between a collapsed position and an expanded position;

wherein in the collapsed position, the upper surface is generally parallel to the lower surface, and wherein in the expanded position, a portion of the upper surface extends at an angle relative to a portion of the lower surface;

wherein the control assembly includes:

an internally threaded receiver extending through the first wedge member;

a first control member coupled to the second wedge member and including internal threads and external threads, wherein the external threads of the first control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the receiver;

a second control member coupled to the second wedge member and including external threads, wherein the external threads of the second control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the first control member.

The expandable implant of claim 6 , wherein the top support assembly includes a first portion and a second portion, and the bottom support assembly includes a third portion and a fourth portion, wherein in the collapsed position, the first and second portions are generally aligned and the third and fourth portions are generally aligned, and wherein in the expanded position, the first portion forms an angle with the second portion, and the third portion forms an angle with the fourth portion.

8. The expandable implant of claim 6 , wherein relative movement between the first wedge member and the second wedge member causes relative movement between the top support assembly and the bottom support assembly.

9. The expandable implant of claim 6 , wherein threading of the first control member within the receiver causes linear movement of the top support assembly away from the bottom support assembly; and

wherein threading of the second control member within the first control member cause nonlinear movement of a portion of the top support assembly relative to a portion of the bottom support assembly.

10. A method of using an expandable implant, comprising:

providing an expandable implant comprising a top support assembly, a bottom support assembly, and a control assembly coupled to the top and bottom support assemblies;

manipulating the control assembly in a first manner to move the top support assembly in a linear fashion relative to the bottom support assembly; and

manipulating the control assembly in a second manner to move at least a portion of the top support assembly in a non-linear fashion relative to at least a portion of the bottom support assembly;

wherein the control assembly includes:

an internally threaded receiver;

a first control member including internal threads and external threads, wherein the external threads of the first control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the receiver;

a second control member including external threads, wherein the external threads of the second control member threadingly engage the internal threads of the first control member.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein manipulating the control assembly in the first manner includes threading the first control member within the receiver to cause linear movement of the top support assembly away from the bottom support assembly; and

manipulating the control assembly in the second manner includes threading the second control member within the first control member to cause nonlinear movement of a portion of the top support assembly relative to a portion of the bottom support assembly.
