Abstract

The disclosed technology in this patent document includes, among others, methods and apparatus for distributed measuring at least one of fiber bend or stress related characteristics along an optical path of a fiber under test (FUT) using both a light input unit and a light output unit connected to the FUT at one single end.

Claims (12)

1. An optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR) device, comprising:

a light source that produces coherent continuous wave probe light at an optical wavelength that is tunable in wavelength;

an optical unit that includes a first optical port to receive the coherent continuous wave probe light produced by the light source, a second optical port to direct the coherent continuous wave probe light received at the first optical port to an output path and to receive reflected light from the output path, and a third optical port that outputs the reflected light received at the second optical port;

a polarization beam splitter (PBS) that includes a first PBS port coupled to the output path that is coupled to the second optical port of the optical unit to receive the coherent continuous wave probe light, a second PBS port coupled to a fiber link under test to direct the coherent continuous wave probe light received at the first PBS port to the fiber link under test and to receive reflected probe light from the fiber link under test, and a third PBS port, wherein the polarization beam splitter is structured to direct light in a first optical polarization received at the first PBS port to the second PBS port and to direct light in a second optical polarization orthogonal to the first optical polarization received at the first PBS port to the third PBS port, and wherein the polarization beam splitter is structured to direct light in the first optical polarization received at the second PBS port to the first PBS port and then to the second optical port of the optical unit and to direct light in the second optical polarization received at the second PBS port to the third PBS port;

a first optical detector coupled to receive light from the third optical port of the optical unit and a part of the coherent continuous wave probe light produced by the light source to produce a first detector signal representing a beat signal between the light from the third optical port of the optical unit and the part of the coherent continuous wave probe light produced by the light source;

a second optical detector coupled to receive light from the third PBS port of the polarization beam splitter and a part of the coherent continuous wave probe light produced by the light source to produce a second detector signal representing a beat signal between the light from the third PBS port of the polarization beam splitter and the part of the coherent continuous wave probe light produced by the light source; and

a signal processor that is coupled to the first and second optical detectors to receive the first and second detector signals and performs a fast Fourier transform on the first and second detector signals to extract optical loss caused by a fiber bend or stress present in the fiber link under test and to determine a parameter of the fiber bend or stress.

2. The device as in claim 1 , wherein the light source includes different tunable coherent continuous wave lasers that produce coherent continuous wave laser light at different wavelengths.

3. The device as in claim 1 , wherein the parameter of the fiber bend or stress includes a fiber bend length.

4. The device as in claim 1 , wherein the parameter of the fiber bend or stress includes a fiber bend radius.

5. The device as in claim 1 , wherein the parameter of the fiber bend or stress includes a fiber type of the fiber link under test.

6. The device as in claim 1 , further comprising a clock reference device to provide a clock reference signal to the signal processor in processing the first and second detector signals.
