Abstract

The disclosure relates to a data processing device, comprising: a processing element configured to process a plurality of data packets according to a communication protocol to provide a plurality of processed data packets each comprising a first part and a second part; and an interface configured to offload the second parts of the plurality of processed data packets to a remote data processing device and configured to notify the remote processing device of the offload of the second parts of the plurality of processed data packets.

Claims (30)

1. A data processing device configured for split layer 2 (L2) buffering, the device comprising:

a communication processor and an application processor coupled by an interface, the communication processor comprising:

a layer 2 (L2) processor configured to:

retrieve a plurality of protocol data units (PDUs) from a layer 1 (L1) buffer;

process the PDUs according to L2 communication protocol to generate a plurality of processed PDUs each comprising a header portion and a user data portion;

store the header portions of the processed PDUs in a header buffer;

offload user data portions;

provide the user data portions of the processed PDUs to the interface for storage in a user data buffer associated with the applications processor; and

provide a new data indication to notify the application processor that the user data portions associated with a transmission time interval (TTI) are available and to trigger processing of the offloaded user data portions by a network processing element of the application processor.

2. The data processing device of claim 1 ,

wherein the new data indication is decoupled from the offloading of the user data portions of the plurality of processed PDUs.

3. The data processing device of claim 2 , wherein the L2 processor is configured to process the PDUs per single TTI and configured to notify the application processor of the offload per single TTI or per multiple TTIs.

4. The data processing device of claim 1 , wherein the L2 processor is configured to decipher the plurality of PDUs to provide the user data portions.

5. The data processing device of claim 1 ,

wherein the interface is one of a PCIe interface, a shared memory interface or an interface according to a bus protocol derived from PCI.

6. The data processing device of claim 1 ,

wherein the L2 communication protocol is a Layer 2 cellular network protocol.

7. The data processing device of one claim 1 , wherein the L2 processor is configured to re-order the plurality of PDUs in accordance with an Radio Link Control (RLC) retransmission protocol before offloading the user data portions.

8. The data processing device of claim 1 , wherein the communication processor comprising: an intermediate buffer configured to temporarily store the user data, portions of the processed PDUs before the offloading.

9. The data processing device of claim 8 , wherein the communication processor comprising: an inter-processor communication (IPC) device configured to provide a location of the user data portions stored in the intermediate buffer to the interface for controlling the offloading of the user data portions.

10. A method for processing payload data using split layer 2 (L2) buffering, the method performed by a data processing device comprising:

a communications processor and an application processor coupled by an interface, the method comprising:

retrieving a plurality of protocol data units (PDUs) from a layer 1 (L1) buffer;

processing the PDUs according to a L2 communication protocol to generate a plurality of processed PDUs each comprising a header portion and a user data portion;

storing the header portions of the processed PDUs in a header buffer;

offloading user data portions;

provide the user data portions of the processed PDUs to the interface for storage in a user data buffer associated with the applications processor; and

providing a new data indication to notify the applications processor that the user data portions associated with a transmission time interval (TTI) are available and to trigger processing of the offloaded user data portions by a network processing element of the application processor.

11. The method of claim 10 ,

wherein the providing of the new data indication is decoupled from the offloading of the user data portions.
