Abstract

A patient support apparatus, such as a hospital bed, includes an alert light assembly or an alert light module having separate zones that are individually illuminated to convey information regarding respective alert conditions. The zones each have indicia related to a particular condition of the patient support apparatus. The illuminated zones are each sufficiently large so as to be seen from afar, such as on the order of ten feet or more. Alternatively or additionally, a GUI of the patient support apparatus displays alert indicia as part of a screen saver. Further alternatively or additionally, the patient support apparatus illuminates an alert light in a manner indicating an optimal time for taking a patient's vital signs.

Claims (19)

1. A patient support apparatus comprising

a frame configured to support a patient, the frame having a head end, a foot end, and a pair of laterally spaced apart sides, the head end and the foot end being spaced apart in a longitudinal dimension of the patient support apparatus, the frame having a lateral frame member at the foot end, the lateral frame member extending substantially a full distance between the laterally spaced apart sides and having an interior region, and

a plurality of alert lights coupled to the lateral frame member and situated inside the interior region of the lateral frame member, the plurality of alert lights individually illuminating separate zones along the lateral frame member to convey information regarding respective alert conditions, each zone of the separate zones being sufficiently large to extend at least half the distance between a top and a bottom of the lateral frame member without extending beyond the top and bottom of the lateral frame member.

2. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a footboard that is removably coupleable to the foot end of the frame, wherein the plurality of alert lights remain coupled to the lateral frame member when the footboard is removed from the frame.

3. The patient support apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the footboard has a bottom edge that is situated atop the lateral frame member when the footboard is attached to the frame so that each illuminated zone is visible beneath the bottom edge of the footboard.

4. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each zone of the separate zones of the plurality of alert lights each include a lens and the lenses of the separate zones are spaced horizontally along the lateral frame member.

5. The patient support apparatus of claim 4 , wherein there are four separate zones and the lens of each separate zone has indicia associated therewith to indicate a particular condition of the patient support apparatus being monitored.

6. The patient support apparatus of claim 5 , wherein a first indicia associated with a first lens relates to a patient position monitoring system, a second indicia associated with a second lens relates to a position of a first portion of the frame relative to a second portion of the frame, and a third indicia of a third lens relates to a position of a siderail that is coupled to the frame.

7. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an elongated bar that serves as a carrier for the separate zones, the elongated bar having openings around the separate zones through which light passes, and the elongate bar is coupled to the lateral frame member.

8. The patient support apparatus of claim 7 , wherein at least a portion of the elongated bar is situated in the interior region of the lateral frame member.

9. The patient support apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the lateral frame member has a laterally extending space that receives at least a portion of the elongated bar.

10. The patient support apparatus of claim 7 , wherein at least one of the separate zones include a lens in a respective opening of the elongated bar and at least one light emitter behind the respective lens.

11. The patient support apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the at least one light emitter includes a first light emitter that emits green light and a second light emitter that emits amber light.

12. The patient support apparatus of claim 7 , wherein portions of the elongated bar serve as partitions between the openings.

13. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the lateral frame member is included as part of a foot section of a patient support deck of the frame.

14. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the frame includes a base frame and an upper frame supported above the base frame and wherein the lateral frame member is included as part of the upper frame.

15. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the set of zones includes four zones that are spaced substantially equidistantly from each other along a horizontal dimension of the lateral frame member.

16. The patient support apparatus of claim 15 , wherein first and second zones of the four zones lie on one side of a midpoint of the lateral frame member and third and fourth zones of the four zones lie on an opposite side of the midpoint.

17. The patient support apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the each zone of the four zones is substantially equivalent in size and shape to each of the other zones.
