Abstract

A control system suitable for use with a bathing unit system having a water receptacle is provided. The control system comprises first and second heating modules and a controller configured for activating a specific one of the first and second heating module at least in part based on whether the bathing unit is in use.

Claims (45)

1. A control system for a spa having a receptacle holding water and a cover for covering the receptacle, said control system comprising:

a) a first heating module for heating the water of the receptacle;

b) a second heating module for heating the water of the receptacle;

c) a sensor in communication with the bathing cover covering the receptacle holding water;

d) a controller in communication with said first heating module and said second heating module, said controller being configured for controlling the operation of the first heating module and the second heating module to heat the water of the receptacle both when the spa is in use by a bather for bathing and when the spa is not in use by the bather for bathing, said controller including a processor programmed for:

i) detecting removal of the bathing cover covering the receptacle holding water by processing signals originating from the sensor;

ii) detecting that the spa is in use by the bather for bathing and activating a specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle in response to detection of the removal of the bathing cover covering the receptacle holding water; and

iii) using one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle when no use of the spa is detected.

A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the first heating module, and wherein in response to the detection of the removal of the bathing cover covering the receptacle holding water, the processor is programmed to activate the first heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without activating the second heating module.

A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the first heating module, and wherein in response to the detection of the removal of the bathing cover covering the receptacle holding water, the processor is programmed to activate the first heating module in order to use the first heating module together with the second heating module to heat the water.

A control system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the second heating module, and wherein when no use of the spa is detected, the processor is programmed to use the second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without using the first heating module.

A control system as defined in claim 3 , wherein the one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the second heating module, and wherein when no use of the spa is detected, the processor is programmed to use the second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without using the first heating module.

6. A control system as defined in claim 1 , said system further comprising:

a) a first input for receiving electrical power from a first power source;

b) a second input for receiving electrical power from a second power source.

7. A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first heating module is a primary heating module and wherein the second heating module is an auxiliary heating module.

8. A control system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the primary heating module requires a first amount of electrical power to be operated and wherein the auxiliary heating module requires a second amount of electrical power to be operated.

9. A control system as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first amount of electrical power required for activating the primary heating module is greater than the second amount of electrical power required for activating the auxiliary heating module.

10. A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the primary heating module is configured to emit a first level of heat when operated and wherein the auxiliary heating module is configured to emit a second level of heat when operated.

11. A control system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the first level of heat emitted by the primary heating module when operated is greater than the second level of heat emitted by the auxiliary heating module when operated.

12. A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the electrical power supplied to said second heating module is derived at least in part based on solar energy.

13. A control system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the processor of said controller is further programmed for:

a) deriving activity information associated with use of said first heating module and said second heating module;

b) releasing a signal for causing the derived activity information to be conveyed to a user on a screen of an auxiliary I/O device.

14. A control system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the derived activity information conveys energy consumption information associated with said first and second heating modules.

15. A control system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the derived activity information conveys a number of hours said second heating module has been in operation relative to said first heating module.

16. A control system for a spa having a receptacle holding water and a cover for covering the receptacle, said control system comprising:

a) a first heating module for heating the water of the receptacle;

b) a second heating module for heating the water of the receptacle;

c) a control panel having one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa, said control panel further including at least one other user operable control element for activating elements of the spa when a bather is using the spa for bathing, the at least one other control element being distinct from the one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa and being configured for operating elements of the spa other than the first heating module and the second heating module;

d) a controller in communication with said first heating module and said second heating module, said controller being configured for controlling the operation of the first heating module and the second heating module to heat the water of the receptacle both when the spa is in use by the bather for bathing and when the spa is not in use by the bather for bathing, said controller including a processor programmed for:

i) detecting an actuation of the at least one other user operable control element distinct from the one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa;

ii) detecting that the spa is in use by the bather for bathing and activating a specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle in response to detection of the actuation of the at least one other user operable control element distinct from the one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa; and

iii) using one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle when no use of the spa is detected.

A control system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the at least one other user operable control element is an actuator which when actuated caused the spa to start operating for usage by the bather, the at least one other user operable control element being configured for controlling at least one operational setting selected from the set consisting of jet control settings, lighting settings and multimedia component settings.

18. A control system as defined in claim 17 , wherein the at least one other control element is a start button.

A control system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the first heating module, and wherein in response to the detection of the actuation of the at least one other user operable control element distinct from the one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa, the processor is programmed to activate the first heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without activating the second heating module.

A control system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the first heating module, and wherein in response to the detection of the actuation of the at least one other user operable control element distinct from the one or more control elements for setting temperature parameters in the spa, the processor is programmed to activate the first heating module in order to use the first heating module together with the second heating module to heat the water.

A control system as defined in claim 20 , wherein the one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the second heating module, and wherein when no use of the spa is detected, the processor is programmed to use the second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without using the first heating module.

A control system as defined in claim 21 , wherein the one other than the specific one of said first heating module and said second heating module is the second heating module, and wherein when no use of the spa is detected, the processor is programmed to use the second heating module to heat the water in the receptacle without using the first heating module.

23. A control system as defined in claim 16 , wherein the processor of said controller is further programmed for:

a) deriving activity information associated with use of said first heating module and said second heating module;

b) releasing a signal for causing the derived activity information to be conveyed to a user on a screen of an auxiliary I/O device.

24. A control system as defined in claim 23 , wherein the derived activity information conveys energy consumption information associated with said first and second heating modules.

25. A control system as defined in claim 23 , wherein the derived activity information conveys a number of hours said second heating module has been in operation relative to said first heating module.
