Abstract

There is disclosed a computer device for generating a recommendation message to a user device, the computer device including a processor configured to: receive a context for a user of the user device; and select at least one recommendation for the user in dependence on the context, wherein the at least one recommendation varies in dependence on the context, such that a first at least one recommendation for a user in a first context is different from a second at least one recommendation for the same user in a second context.

Claims (34)

1. A computer device for generating a recommendation message to a user device, the computer device including a recommendation engine comprising:

an input interface configured to receive context data for a user of the user device; and

a processor configured to:

determine a context for the user in dependence on the received context data, the context being an evaluation of the user's circumstance based on context data received from the user device of the user and other user devices;

select a set of recommendations for the user in dependence on the context, the set of recommendations for the user varying in dependence on the received context of the user, such that a first set of recommendations for the user in a first context is different from a second set of recommendations for the user in a second context; and

an output interface configured to transmit the recommendation message to the user device,

wherein the processor is further configured to:

associate each recommendation of the set of recommendations with a recommendation identifier;

include the recommendation identifiers in the recommendation message; and

include, in each recommendation message:

an object identifier configured to identify content recommended for the user of the user device, and

an action identifier configured to identify an action recommended for the user of the user device to perform with respect to the content identified by the object identifier, such that the recommendation is to perform that recommended action on or with that identified content, and wherein the action to be performed by the user device is either to consume the content or launch the content,

wherein the identified content is consumed or launched for the user for which the context has been evaluated.

2. The computer device of claim 1 wherein the action identifier is configured to identify an action to perform within a current application.

3. The computer device of claim 1 wherein the action identifier is configured to identify an action to perform off-line.

4. A method for generating a recommendation message to a user device, the method implemented on a computer device including a recommendation engine, the method comprising:

receiving context data for a user of the user device; and

determining a context for the user in dependence on the received context data, the context being an evaluation of the user's circumstance based on context data received from the user device of the user and other user devices;

selecting a set of recommendations for the user in dependence on the context, the set of recommendations varying in dependence on the context, such that a first set of recommendations for a user in a first context is different from a second set of recommendations for the same user in a second context; and

transmitting the recommendation message to the user device, wherein the method further comprises:

associating each recommendation with a recommendation identifier;

including the recommendation identifier in each recommendation message; and

including, in each recommendation message:

an object identifier configured to identify content recommended for the user of the device, and

an action identifier configured to identify an action recommended for the user of the user device to perform with respect to the content identified by the object identifier, such that the recommendation is to perform that recommended action on or with that identified content and wherein the action to be performed by the user device is either to consume the content or launch the content,

wherein the identified content is consumed or launched for the user for which the context has been evaluated.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the recommendation identifier is configured to include an object identifier and no action identifier.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein the recommendation identifier is configured to include an action identifier and no object identifier.

7. The method of claim 4 wherein the action identifier is configured to identify an action to perform within a current application.

8. The method of claim 4 wherein the action identifier is configured to identify an action to perform off-line.

9. The computer device according to claim 1 in which the action identifier identifies an action to launch the content identified by the object identifier, and the object identifier identifies one of: an email service; a game; a communication client; a uniform resource locator.

10. The computer device according to claim 1 in which the action identifier identifies an action to be performed on the content identified by the object identifier, wherein the action is to consume, rate, like or share the content or comment on the content.

11. The method according to claim 4 in which the action identifier identifies an action to launch the content identified by the object identifier, and the object identifier identifies one of: an email service; a game; a communication client; a uniform resource locator.

12. The method according to claim 4 in which the action identifier identifies an action to be performed on the content identified by the object identifier, wherein the action is to consume, rate, like or share the content or comment on the content.
