Abstract

Systems and methods for detecting a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The system comprises a sensing arrangement and a control unit. The sensing arrangement collects eye movement data of a user. The control unit is in communication with the sensing arrangement and configured to compare the eye movement data to one or more baseline measurements of eye movement dynamics. The control unit is also configured to generate an alert indicating the presence or severity of the TBI for delivery to control unit administrator if the eye movement data diverges from one or more of the baseline measurements by a threshold amount.

Claims (27)

1. A system for detecting a traumatic brain injury (TBI), comprising:

a sensing arrangement including a camera that collects eye movement data of a user;

a control unit in communication with the sensing arrangement and including processing hardware configured to analyze the eye movement data and generate one of a visual, audio, and vibrational alert, the control unit being configured to:

calculate, from the eye movement data, one or more intersaccadic drift velocities;

compare the eye movement data, including the one or more intersaccadic drift velocities, to one or more baseline measurements of eye movement dynamics; and

if the eye movement data diverges from one or more of the baseline measurements by a threshold amount, generate the alert indicating a presence or a severity of the TBI for delivery to the user.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more intersaccadic drift velocities include a current intersaccadic drift velocity of the user and the baseline measurements include one or more threshold drift velocities.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the eye movement data comprises one or more saccade parameters.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the one or more intersaccadic drift velocities include a current intersaccadic drift velocity of the user and the baseline measurements include threshold drift velocities.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is also configured to record the one or more baseline measurements of eye movement dynamics.

6. A method of determining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) of a user, the method comprising:

a) recording from the user eye movement data of one or both of the user's eyes using a camera;

b) calculating, from the eye movement data, one or more intersaccadic drift velocities using a control unit in communication with the camera and including processing hardware configured to analyze the eye movement data and generate an alert;

c) comparing the eye movement data, including the one or more intersaccadic drift velocities, to one or more baseline measurements using the control unit; and

d) if the eye movement data diverges from one or more of the baseline measurements by a threshold amount, delivering the alert indicating a presence or a severity of the TBI to the user via an alerting arrangement in communication with the control unit.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein step a) includes recording one or more baseline measurements of eye movement dynamics.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the baseline measurements are collected from a subject other than the user.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising collecting the baseline measurements from the user before step a).

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein step b) includes calculating a current intersaccadic drift velocity of the user and step c) includes comparing the current intersaccadic drift velocity to one or more threshold drift velocities of the baseline measurements.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein the eye movement data further comprises one or more saccade parameters.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein step b) includes calculating a current intersaccadic drift velocity of the user and comparing the current intersaccadic drift velocity to one or more threshold drift velocities of the baseline measurements.

13. The method of claim 6 , wherein step a) includes calibrating the recording of the eye movement data to one or both of a data model comprising the baseline measurements, and a comparison method.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein calibrating the recording of the eye movement data to the data model comprises:

recording, from the user, a calibration set of eye movement data under normal conditions;

comparing the calibration set of eye movement data to the data model;

determining a deviation of the calibration set of eye movement data from the data model; and

adapting the data model to include the deviation and generate an adapted data model for the user.
