Abstract

A method for manufacturing capsules for an in inkjet ink includes the steps of a) preparing a non-aqueous solution of a first shell component for forming a polymeric shell and one or more chemical reactants optionally in an organic solvent having a low miscibility with water and having a lower boiling point than water; b) preparing an aqueous solution of a second shell component for forming the polymeric shell and an amphoteric surfactant; c) dispersing the non-aqueous solution under high shear in the aqueous solution; d) optionally stripping the organic solvent from the mixture of the aqueous solution and the non-aqueous solution; and e) preparing a polymeric shell around the one or more chemical reactants by interfacial polymerization of the first and second shell components for forming the polymeric shell.

Claims (40)

1. A method for manufacturing capsules for an inkjet ink, the method comprising the steps of:

a) preparing a non-aqueous solution of a first shell component of a polymeric shell and one or more chemical reactants, optionally in an organic solvent having a low miscibility with water and having a lower boiling point than water;

b) preparing an aqueous solution of a second shell component of the polymeric shell and an amphoteric surfactant;

c) dispersing the non-aqueous solution under shear in the aqueous solution;

d) optionally stripping the organic solvent from a mixture of the aqueous solution and the non-aqueous solution; and

e) preparing the polymeric shell around the one or more chemical reactants by interfacial polymerization of the first shell component and the second shell component of the polymeric shell; wherein

the amphoteric surfactant consists of 85% to 100% of a surfactant according to Formula (I):

R represents an optionally substituted aliphatic chain including 8 to 22 carbon atoms, wherein optionally substituted means substituted by a hydroxyl group, a halogen, an ether group including 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an amide group including 1 to 6 carbon atoms, an alkyl group including 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and an aryl group including 1 to 8 carbon atoms;

L represents a divalent linking group including 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and

M + represents a proton or a counterion to compensate for a negative charge of the carboxylate group.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein R is a hydrocarbon chain.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the aqueous solution includes a colorant.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the colorant is a color pigment.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more chemical reactants include a thermally curable compound or a UV curable compound.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the thermally curable compound includes one or more blocked isocyanate groups.

7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the UV curable compound is a monomer, oligomer, or polymer including one or more free radical curable groups.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first shell component of the polymeric shell is selected from the group consisting of di-isocyanates and oligoisocyanates.

9. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the first shell component of the polymeric shell is selected from the group consisting of di-isocyanates and oligoisocyanates.

10. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the first shell component of the polymeric shell is selected from the group consisting of di-isocyanates and oligoisocyanates.

11. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the second shell component of the polymeric shell is selected from the group consisting of diamines and oligoamines, and/or selected from the group consisting of dialcohols and oligoalcohols.

12. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the second shell component of the polymeric shell is selected from the group consisting of diamines and oligoamines, and/or selected from the group consisting of dialcohols and oligoalcohols.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the amphoteric surfactant is one or more surfactants selected from the group consisting of:
