Abstract

A device to regulate tension of an actuation element for actuating movement of a surgical instrument includes an elastically deformable body configured to be coupled to the actuation element. The deformable body is configured to elastically deform in response to a state of slack occurring in the actuation element. As slack occurs in the actuation element, the deformable body is configured to divert a path of the actuation element to accommodate the slack so the path of the actuation element differs from an axis the actuation element follows prior to the actuation element developing slack. A force transmission mechanism for a teleoperated surgical instrument includes a chassis, an actuation input mechanism, an actuation element, and a tension regulator coupled to the actuation element to compensate for slack of the actuation element.

Claims (44)

1. A structure for actuating movement of an end effector of a surgical instrument, the structure comprising:

an actuation element movable in translation to actuate movement of the end effector; and

an elastically deformable body coupled to the actuation element;

wherein the elastically deformable body and the actuation element are moveable together in translation,

wherein the elastically deformable body is elastically deformable in response to a state of slack occurring in the actuation element

wherein the elastically deformable body is configured to divert a path followed by the actuation element to a diverted path in response to a state of slack occurring in the actuation element, and

wherein the diverted path differs from a path followed by the actuation element prior to the actuation element being in the state of slack.

2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the elastically deformable body extends a length of the diverted path of the actuation element along a direction forming a nonzero angle with the path of the actuation element prior to the actuation element being in the state of slack.

3. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the diverted path extends along a direction substantially transverse to the path of the actuation element prior to the actuation element being in the state of slack.

4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the elastically deformable body comprises first and second legs and a central portion between the first and second legs, the first and second legs being elastically deformable relative to the central portion.

5. The structure of claim 4 , wherein the central portion of the elastically deformable body comprises a loop, the actuation element passing through the loop.

6. The structure of claim 5 , wherein the first and second legs each comprise a loop, the actuation element passing through the loop.

7. The structure of claim 4 , wherein an acute angle is defined between the first and second legs in a non-deformed state of the first and second legs.

8. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the elastically deformable body comprises a single piece of wire.

9. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the elastically deformable body comprises a single piece of sheet metal.

10. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the elastically deformable body comprises a single molded piece.

11. A force transmission mechanism for a teleoperated surgical instrument, comprising:

a chassis;

an actuation input mechanism mounted to the chassis and configured to receive forces from an actuation interface assembly of a teleoperated surgical system;

an actuation element moveable in translation so as to transmit force from the actuation input mechanism to an end effector of the surgical instrument to actuate the end effector; and

an elastically deformable body coupled to the actuation element;

wherein the elastically deformable body and the actuation element are moveable together in translation,

wherein the elastically deformable body is elastically deformable in response to a state of slack occurring in the actuation element,

wherein the elastically deformable body is configured to divert a path followed by the actuation element to a diverted path in response to a state of slack occurring in the actuation element, and

wherein the diverted path differs from a path followed by the actuation element prior to the actuation element being in the state of slack.

12. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein a portion of the actuation element extending through the elastically deformable body extends through the elastically deformable body in a continuous manner.

13. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein the elastically deformable body comprises first and second legs connected to a central portion of the elastically deformable body, and wherein the first and second legs are elastically deformable relative to the central portion.

14. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein the elastically deformable body has a single piece construction.

15. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein the actuation element comprises two actuation element portions extending from the actuation input mechanism to an exit aperture of the force transmission mechanism, and wherein the elastically deformable body is coupled to one of the actuation element portions.

16. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein the actuation element comprises two actuation element portions extending from the actuation input mechanism to an exit aperture of the force transmission mechanism, and wherein the elastically deformable body comprises a first elastically deformable body and a second elastically deformable body, each of the first elastically deformable body and the second elastically deformable body being coupled to one of the two actuation element portions.

17. The force transmission mechanism of claim 11 , wherein the actuation element comprises two actuation element portions extending from the actuation input mechanism to an exit aperture of the force transmission mechanism, and wherein the elastically deformable body is coupled between the actuation element portions.

18. A surgical instrument comprising:

an actuation element;
