Buttress and surgical stapling apparatus
Multilayer structures including a porous layer and a non-porous layer are useful as buttresses when associated with a surgical stapling apparatus.
1. A surgical stapling device comprising: a staple cartridge containing at least one staple and including a staple ejecting surface having an opening through which the at least one staple is ejected; wherein the staple ejecting surface of the staple cartridge includes a plurality of pins, each pin of the plurality of pins extending along an axis transverse to the staple ejecting surface, and laterally spaced inwardly of outer side edges of the staple ejecting surface; and a buttress on the staple cartridge, the buttress including a porous layer including a plurality of pores and a non-porous layer, and having at least one bioactive agent, the bioactive agent being combined with the buttress or any of the components of the buttress and being a compound that affects cell growth, the buttress being releasably attached to the staple cartridge by frictional, and releasable, engagement with the plurality of pins of the staple cartridge.
2. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , further comprising an anvil having a staple forming surface, and a second buttress attached to the anvil.
3. The surgical stapling device according to claim 2 , wherein the staple forming surface of the anvil includes a plurality of pins extending outwardly therefrom, and the second buttress is attached to the anvil by friction and releasable engagement with the plurality of pins of the anvil.
4. The surgical stapling device according to claim 3 , wherein the plurality of pins of the anvil are fixed to the staple forming surface and extend therefrom along an axis transverse to the staple forming surface.
5. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress has at least one reinforcement member.
6. The surgical stapling device according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one reinforcement member is a mesh.
7. The surgical stapling device according to claim 5 , wherein the at least one reinforcement member is disposed within the non-porous layer of the buttress.
8. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the buttress has filaments.

The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of anti-adhesives, antimicrobials, analgesics, antipyretics, anesthetics, antiepileptics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, cardiovascular drugs, diagnostic agents, sympathomimetics, cholinomimetics, antimuscarinics, antispasmodics, hormones, growth factors, muscle relaxants, adrenergic neuron blockers, antineoplastics, immunogenic agents, immunosuppressants, gastrointestinal drugs, diuretics, steroids, lipids, lipopolysaccharides, polysaccharides, enzymes, and combinations thereof.
10. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of anti-tumor agents and tumor suppressants.
11. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pins are fixed to the staple ejecting surface of the staple cartridge.
12. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein a plurality of pre-defined openings are defined in the buttress, the plurality of pre-defined openings positioned and dimensioned to releasably engage the plurality of pins of the staple cartridge.
13. The surgical stapling device according to claim 1 , wherein the porous layer of the buttress is positioned against the staple ejecting surface of the staple cartridge.
