Abstract

Methods and devices for distributing and receiving content are provided. In one example aspect, a method comprises: receiving a command on a first electronic device to output content at an output device associated with a second electronic device; and in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device: providing content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device, and adjusting a security state on the second electronic device.

Claims (91)

1. A method performed by one or more processors, the method comprising:

establishing a trusted relationship between a first electronic device and a second electronic device;

displaying one or more selectable content viewing options on the first electronic device including a selectable option to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device;

receiving a command on the first electronic device to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, providing content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

establishing the trusted relationship in response to receiving input on the first electronic device and on the second electronic device, the input instructing the first electronic device and the second electronic device to establish the trusted relationship.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content access information comprises the content to be output on the output device associated with the second electronic device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content access information comprises a reference to the content which allows the second electronic device to retrieve the content.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selectable content viewing options include an option to output the content at an output device associated with the first electronic device.

6. A method performed by one or more processors, the method comprising:

establishing a trusted relationship between a first electronic device and a second electronic device;

receiving a command on the first electronic device to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, providing content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device and adjusting a security state on the second electronic device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

causing the second electronic device to transition from a higher level security state to a lower level security state.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the higher level security state is a device locked state and the lower level security state is a device unlocked state, and wherein the device locked state is a state in which one or more features of the second electronic device are disabled and in which authentication information may be input into the second electronic device to transition the second electronic device from the device locked state to the device unlocked state.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

sending authorization information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device, the authorization information being secure information for authorizing the second electronic device to adjust the security state.

10. A first electronic device comprising:

a communication subsystem for communicating with a second electronic device;

one or more processors; and

a memory containing processor readable instructions for causing the one or more processors to:

establish a trusted relationship between the first electronic device and a second electronic device;

display one or more selectable content viewing options on the first electronic device including a selectable option to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device;

receive a command on the first electronic device to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, provide content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device.

11. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

establish the trusted relationship in response to receiving input on the first electronic device and on the second electronic device, the input instructing the first electronic device and the second electronic device to establish the trusted relationship.

12. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the content access information comprises the content to be output on the output device associated with the second electronic device.

13. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the content access information comprises a reference to the content which allows the second electronic device to retrieve the content.

14. The first electronic device of claim 10 , wherein the selectable content viewing options include an option to output the content at an output device associated with the first electronic device.

15. A first electronic device comprising:

a communication subsystem for communicating with a second electronic device;

one or more processors; and

a memory containing processor readable instructions for causing the one or more processors to:

establish a trusted relationship between the first electronic device and a second electronic device;

receive a command on the first electronic device to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, provide content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device and adjust a security state on the second electronic device.

16. The first electronic device of claim 15 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

causing the second electronic device to transition from a higher level security state to a lower level security state.

The first electronic device of claim 16 , wherein the higher level security state is a device locked state and the lower level security state is a device unlocked state, and wherein the device locked state is a state in which one or more features of the second electronic device are disabled and in which authentication information may be input into the second electronic device to transition the second electronic device from the device locked state to the device unlocked state.

18. The first electronic device of claim 15 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

sending authorization information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device, the authorization information being secure information for authorizing the second electronic device to adjust the security state.

19. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising processor-executable instructions which, when executed, configure one or more processors to:

establish a trusted relationship between a first electronic device and a second electronic device;

display one or more selectable content viewing options on the first electronic device including a selectable option to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device;

receive a command on the first electronic device to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, provide content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the processor-executable instructions, when executed, further configure the one or more processors to:

establish the trusted relationship in response to receiving input on the first electronic device and on the second electronic device, the input instructing the first electronic device and the second electronic device to establish the trusted relationship.

21. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the content access information comprises the content to be output on the output device associated with the second electronic device.

22. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the content access information comprises a reference to the content which allows the second electronic device to retrieve the content.

23. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the selectable content viewing options include an option to output the content at an output device associated with the first electronic device.

24. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising processor-executable instructions which, when executed, configure one or more processors to:

establish a trusted relationship between a first electronic device and a second electronic device;

receive a command on the first electronic device to output content at an output device associated with the second electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the second electronic device, provide content access information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device and adjust a security state on the second electronic device.

25. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

causing the second electronic device to transition from a higher level security state to a lower level security state.

The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 25 , wherein the higher level security state is a device locked state and the lower level security state is a device unlocked state, and wherein the device locked state is a state in which one or more features of the second electronic device are disabled and in which authentication information may be input into the second electronic device to transition the second electronic device from the device locked state to the device unlocked state.

27. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 24 , wherein adjusting the security state on the second electronic device comprises:

sending authorization information from the first electronic device to the second electronic device, the authorization information being secure information for authorizing the second electronic device to adjust the security state.

28. A system comprising:

a first electronic device; and

a second electronic device, the second electronic device including:

a communication subsystem for communicating with the first electronic device;

one or more processors; and

a memory containing processor readable instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the second electronic device to:

establish a trusted relationship with the first electronic device;

display one or more selectable content viewing options including a selectable option to output content at an output device associated with the first electronic device;

receive a command to output content at the output device associated with the first electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the first electronic device, provide content access information to the first electronic device.

The system of claim 28 , wherein the first and second electronic device are configured to establish the trusted relationship in response to input received on the first electronic device and on the second electronic device instructing the first electronic device and the second electronic device to establish the trusted relationship.

30. The system of claim 28 , wherein the content access information comprises the content to be output on the output device associated with the first electronic device.

31. The system of claim 28 , wherein the content access information comprises a reference to the content which allows the first electronic device to retrieve the content.

32. The system of claim 28 , wherein the selectable content viewing options include an option to output the content at an output device associated with the second electronic device.

33. A system comprising:

a first electronic device; and

a second electronic device, the second electronic device including:

a communication subsystem for communicating with the first electronic device;

one or more processors; and

a memory containing processor readable instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the second electronic device to:

establish a trusted relationship with the first electronic device;

receive a command to output content at an output device associated with the first electronic device; and

in response to receiving the command to output content at the output device associated with the first electronic device, provide content access information to the first electronic device and adjust a security state on the first electronic device.

34. The system of claim 33 , wherein adjusting the security state on the first electronic device comprises:

causing the first electronic device to transition from a higher level security state to a lower level security state.

The system of claim 33 , wherein the higher level security state is a device locked state and the lower level security state is a device unlocked state, and wherein the device locked state is a state in which one or more features of the first electronic device are disabled and in which authentication information may be input into the first electronic device to transition the first electronic device from the device locked state to the device unlocked state.

36. The system of claim 33 , wherein adjusting the security state on the first electronic device comprises:

sending authorization information from the second electronic device to the first electronic device, the authorization information being secure information for authorizing the first electronic device to adjust the security state.
