NOTIFYING USERS THAT WERE EARLY CONSUMERS OF POPULAR MEDIA CONTENT
Systems and methods are provided for notifying a user regarding early consumption of a popular content item. In one or more aspects, a system includes an identification component configured to identify a user that was among a first X percentage of users to access a content item that is ranked as a popular content item based in part on total number of times the content item was previously accessed, a notification generation component configured to generate a notification identifying the user as being among the first X percentage of users to access the popular content item, and a notification posting component configured to send the notification to a device or an account of the user.
1 . A method for notifying early consumers of media content, the method comprising:
identifying a media content item from a plurality of media content items that has been classified as being a popular media content item;
identifying a user account that is deemed to be an early consumer of the popular media content item in response to determining that a user associated with the user account consumed the media content item at a time that falls within an initial portion of users that accessed the media content item based on an order in which the users accessed the media content item; and
causing a user interface that includes a notification identifying the user as being the early consumer of the media content item to be presented on a device associated with the user account.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content item is classified as being the popular media content item based on a determination that the media content item has been viewed more than a predetermined number of times.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the user associated with the user account shared the popular media content item with at least one other user account, wherein the notification indicates a number of times the popular media content item was viewed based on the sharing of the popular media content item by the user.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user associated with the account consumed the media content item via a particular source.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
identifying a second media content item classified as being a second popular media content item; and
determining that the user associated with the user account has not viewed the second media content item, wherein the notification includes a recommendation to view the second media content item.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the notification includes an icon that can be shared using a social networking service associated with the user account.
7 . A system for notifying early consumers of media content, the system comprising:
a hardware processor that is programmed to:
identify a media content item from a plurality of media content items that has been classified as being a popular media content item;
identify a user account that is deemed to be an early consumer of the popular media content item in response to determining that a user associated with the user account consumed the media content item at a time that falls within an initial portion of users that accessed the media content item based on an order in which the users accessed the media content item; and
cause a user interface that includes a notification identifying the user as being the early consumer of the media content item to be presented on a device associated with the user account.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the media content item is classified as being the popular media content item based on a determination that the media content item has been viewed more than a predetermined number of times.
9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to determine that the user associated with the user account shared the popular media content item with at least one other user account, wherein the notification indicates a number of times the popular media content item was viewed based on the sharing of the popular media content item by the user.
10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the user associated with the account consumed the media content item via a particular source.
11 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the hardware processor is further programmed to:
identify a second media content item classified as being a second popular media content item; and
determine that the user associated with the user account has not viewed the second media content item, wherein the notification includes a recommendation to view the second media content item.
12 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the notification includes an icon that can be shared using a social networking service associated with the user account.
13 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing computer executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for notifying early consumers of media content, the method comprising:
identifying a media content item from a plurality of media content items that has been classified as being a popular media content item;
identifying a user account that is deemed to be an early consumer of the popular media content item in response to determining that a user associated with the user account consumed the media content item at a time that falls within an initial portion of users that accessed the media content item based on an order in which the users accessed the media content item; and
causing a user interface that includes a notification identifying the user as being the early consumer of the media content item to be presented on a device associated with the user account.
14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the media content item is classified as being the popular media content item based on a determination that the media content item has been viewed more than a predetermined number of times.
15 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises determining that the user associated with the user account shared the popular media content item with at least one other user account, wherein the notification indicates a number of times the popular media content item was viewed based on the sharing of the popular media content item by the user.
16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the user associated with the account consumed the media content item via a particular source.
17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the method further comprises:
identifying a second media content item classified as being a second popular media content item; and
determining that the user associated with the user account has not viewed the second media content item, wherein the notification includes a recommendation to view the second media content item.
18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the notification includes an icon that can be shared using a social networking service associated with the user account.
