Abstract

A multiple power supply system includes first and second power supply units. The first power supply unit provides a main output voltage while in a normal mode of operation. The first power supply unit includes a first bulk capacitor, and first standby power circuitry. The first standby power circuitry provides a standby voltage while the first power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation. The second power supply unit provides the main output voltage while in the normal mode of operation. The first power supply unit includes a second bulk capacitor, and second standby power circuitry. The second standby power circuitry provides the standby voltage while the first power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation, and enables reverse charging of the second bulk capacitor by the first power supply unit while the second power supply unit is in a reverse charging mode of operation.

Claims (27)

1. A multiple power supply system comprising:

an output voltage terminal;

a standby voltage terminal;

a first power supply unit having a first terminal coupled to the output voltage terminal and a second terminal coupled to the standby voltage terminal, the first power supply to provide, via the output voltage terminal, a main output voltage while in a normal mode of operation, the first power supply unit including:

a first bulk capacitor; and

first standby power circuitry, the first standby power circuitry to provide a standby voltage while the first power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation; and

a second power supply unit having a third terminal coupled to the output voltage terminal and a fourth terminal coupled to the standby voltage terminal, the second power supply unit to provide, via the output voltage terminal, the main output voltage while in the normal mode of operation, the second power supply unit including:

a second bulk capacitor; and

second standby power circuitry, the second standby power circuitry to provide the standby voltage while the second power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation, and in response to the second standby power circuitry being disabled from providing the standby voltage while the second power supply unit is in a reverse charging mode of operation, and in response to a transistor array of the second power supply unit being closed: the second standby power circuitry to receive a current from the first power supply unit via the first terminal and the third terminal; and to provide the current to the second bulk capacitor to reverse charge the second bulk capacitor, wherein the transistor array includes a first transistor connected in series with a second transistor.

2. The multiple power supply system of claim 1 wherein the second power supply unit enters the reverse charging mode of operation in response to an input voltage source to the second power supply unit being off.

3. The multiple power supply system of claim 2 wherein the second power supply unit provides a lower charging cycle in the reverse charging mode of operation in response to the second bulk capacitor being charged to a predetermined voltage level.

4. The multiple power supply system of claim 3 wherein the second power supply unit is maintained in a hot spare mode after the second power supply unit ends the reverse charging mode of operation.

5. The multiple power supply system of claim 1 wherein the first and second bulk capacitors combine to provide both the main output voltage and the standby voltage for a hold up amount of time in response to both a first input voltage to the first power supply unit and a second input voltage to the second power supply unit being off.

6. The multiple power supply system of claim 1 wherein the second standby circuitry comprises a standby integrated circuit, the second standby circuitry is maintained in the reverse charging mode in response to a working voltage of the standby integrated circuit being pulled to ground, and wherein the working voltage of the standby integrated circuit is pulled to ground by a digital signal processor of the second standby circuitry.

7. A multiple power supply system comprising:

an output voltage terminal;

a standby voltage terminal;

a first power supply unit having a first terminal coupled to the output voltage terminal and a second terminal coupled to the standby voltage terminal, the first power supply to provide, via the output voltage terminal, a main output voltage while in a normal mode of operation, the first power supply unit including:

a first bulk capacitor; and

first standby power circuitry to provide a standby voltage while the first power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation; and

a second power supply unit having a third terminal coupled to the output voltage terminal and a fourth terminal coupled to the standby voltage terminal, the second power supply unit to provide, via the output voltage terminal, the main output voltage while in the normal mode of operation, the second power supply unit including:

a second bulk capacitor; and

second standby power circuitry to provide the standby voltage while the second power supply unit is in the normal mode of operation, and in response to the second standby power circuitry being disabled from providing the standby voltage while the second power supply unit is in a reverse charging mode of operation, the second standby power circuitry to receive a current from the first power supply unit to reverse charge the second bulk capacitor by the first standby power circuitry of the first power supply unit via the second terminal and the fourth terminal, wherein the second standby circuitry comprises a standby integrated circuit, the second standby circuitry is maintained in the reverse charging mode in response to a working voltage of the standby integrated circuit being pulled to ground.

8. The multiple power supply system of claim 7 wherein the second power supply unit enters the reverse charging mode of operation in response to an input voltage source to the second power supply unit being off.

9. The multiple power supply system of claim 8 wherein the second power supply unit provides a lower charging cycle in the reverse charging mode of operation in response to the second bulk capacitor being charged to a predetermined voltage level.

10. The multiple power supply system of claim 9 wherein the second power supply unit is maintained in a hot spare mode after the second power supply unit ends the reverse charging mode of operation.
