Abstract

A catheter treatment apparatus comprises an elongate tubular member and an expandable support. The expandable support comprises a radioactive substance to treat cancerous tissue and is configured to expand from a narrow profile for insertion to a wide profile to engage and treat tissue remaining after resection. The expandable support can be sized to fit within a volume of removed tissue to place the radioactive substance in proximity to the capsule and remaining tissue, to spare the capsule and proximate nerves and vessels to treat tissue in proximity to the capsule. The elongate tubular member may comprise a channel such as a lumen to pass a bodily fluid such as urine when the expandable support engages the tissue to treat the patient for a plurality of days. The treatment apparatus can be used to resect and diagnose tissue concurrently. Based on the diagnosis, targeted segmental treatment may be given.

Claims (42)

1. An apparatus to treat a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a water jet source to remove a sample of a tissue from the patient;

a first catheter comprising a radioactive substance to treat a cancer of the patient subsequent to surgery;

a second catheter to treat the patient subsequent to surgery without a radioactive substance; and

a device configured to receive and test the sample and determine whether the patient has the cancer in order to select the first catheter or the second catheter for placement in the patient;

wherein the device is configured to test the sample and determine whether the patient has the cancer within about five minutes.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to identify one or more biomarkers of the cancer.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the one or more biomarkers comprises one or more of an antibody, a cancer cell marker, or an antigen of cells of the cancer, a natural biomarker, a synthetic biomarker, or a tumor protein.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises one or more antibodies to identify one or more cancers of an organ.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to identify a prostate cancer.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the device is configured to identify the prostate cancer substantially in real-time upon receiving the sample.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the water jet is configured to remove the sample when the patient has been placed on a support, wherein the device is configured to receive the sample while the patient remains on the support and provide a diagnosis in order to insert the first catheter or the second catheter into the patient while the patient remains on the support.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the water jet is configured to remove benign prostate hyperplasia and the device is configured to identify a cancer in response to removal of the benign prostate hyperplasia.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the water jet source is configured to remove the sample of the tissue from a plurality of zones of a prostate of the patient.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the water jet source is provided on a treatment apparatus, and wherein the treatment apparatus is configured to extend into and retract from the prostate of the patient.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of zones comprise a plurality of sagittal zones, and wherein the water jet source and/or the treatment apparatus are fully rotated as the treatment apparatus is being retracted from the prostate.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of zones comprise a plurality of transverse zones, and wherein the water jet source and/or the treatment apparatus are partially rotated as the treatment apparatus is being retracted from the prostate.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the device is configured to analyze the removed sample of the tissue in real-time to determine a presence of the cancer as the water jet source is removing the sample of the tissue from the plurality of zones of the prostate.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the device is configured to determine the presence or absence of cancer in each of the plurality of zones of the prostate.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to determine a presence or absence of cancer in the patient based on optical methods.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the optical methods include optical absorption and scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy or microscopy, and/or optical coherence domain reflectometry.

17. An apparatus to treat a patient, the apparatus comprising:

a water jet source to remove a sample of a tissue from the patient;

a first catheter comprising a radioactive substance to treat a cancer of the patient subsequent to surgery;

a second catheter to treat the patient subsequent to surgery without a radioactive substance; and

a device configured to receive and test the sample and determine whether the patient has the cancer in order to select the first catheter or the second catheter for placement in the patient;

wherein the water jet source is configured to remove the sample of the tissue from a plurality of zones of a prostate of the patient;

wherein the device is configured to analyze the removed sample of the tissue in real-time to determine the presence of the cancer as the water jet source is removing the sample of the tissue from the plurality of zones of the prostate.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the device is configured to identify one or more biomarkers of the cancer.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the one or more biomarkers comprises one or more of an antibody, a cancer cell marker, or an antigen of cells of the cancer, a natural biomarker, a synthetic biomarker, or a tumor protein.

20. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the device comprises one or more antibodies to identify one or more cancers of an organ.

21. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the device is configured to identify a prostate cancer.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the device is configured to identify the prostate cancer substantially in real-time upon receiving the sample.

23. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the water jet is configured to remove the sample when the patient has been placed on a support, wherein the device is configured to receive the sample while the patient remains on the support and provide a diagnosis in order to insert the first catheter or the second catheter into the patient while the patient remains on the support.

24. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the water jet is configured to remove benign prostate hyperplasia and the device is configured to identify a cancer in response to removal of the benign prostate hyperplasia.

25. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the device is configured to test the sample and determine whether the patient has the cancer within about five minutes.

26. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the water jet source is provided on a treatment apparatus, and wherein the treatment apparatus is configured to extend into and retract from the prostate of the patient.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 , wherein the plurality of zones comprise a plurality of sagittal zones, and wherein the water jet source and/or the treatment apparatus are fully rotated as the treatment apparatus is being retracted from the prostate.
