Abstract

Described here is a wireless network management system and methods that may include the use of Authorized Device Specific SSIDs (ADSSs), Access Point Managers, Registries, and Wireless Enabled Devices (WEDs) for providing a roaming service. Systems described here may include access points which may establish connections with WEDs using suitable SSIDs and credentials, where WEDs may attempt to connect to access points broadcasting suitable SSIDs automatically when in range. Access point hardware of use in systems described in the present disclosure may be able to broadcast multiple SSIDs, publicly or hidden, and may form one or more virtual access points (VAPs) perceivable by WEDs in range of the access point. Multi-region access point systems described here include a registry used to store information about services associated with WEDs, and are able to return the information to Access Points in multiple regions to provide service to the WEDs.

Claims (60)

1. A device comprising:

one or more processors to:

broadcast a wireless signal including a first public service set identifier (SSID);

receive a connection request from a wireless device detecting the first public SSID,

the connection request containing a wireless identifier associated with the wireless device;

query a registry database using the wireless identifier associated with the wireless device,

the registry database storing at least wireless identifiers;

associate the first public SSID as a first Authorized Device Specific SSID (ADSS) with the wireless device, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database;

broadcast the wireless signal hiding the first public SSID; and

broadcast another wireless signal including a second public SSID that has not been previously associated with any wireless identifier in the registry database.

2. The device of claim 1 , where the device is a wireless access point.

3. The device of claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further to execute an access point manager to query the registry database.

4. The device of claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further to broadcast other wireless signals hiding other public SSIDs associated with other ADSSs.

5. The device of claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further to:

include the wireless identifier and associated ADSS as a record in the registry database, when the wireless identifier did not match any record in the registry database.

6. The device of claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further to

prompt the wireless device to display one or more prompts to begin a registration process, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database.

7. The device of claim 1 , where the one or more processors are further to

perform actions associated with the ADSS including at least one of granting internet access, tracking bandwidth usage, and setting up connection usage policies.

8. A method comprising:

broadcasting, by a device, a wireless signal including a first public service set identifier (SSID);

receiving, from a wireless device and by the device, a connection request from the wireless device detecting the first public SSID,

the connection request containing a wireless identifier associated with the wireless device;

querying, via the device, a registry database using the wireless identifier associated with the wireless device,

the registry database storing at least wireless identifiers;

associating, by the device, the first SSID as a first Authorized Device Specific SSID (ADSS) with the wireless device, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database;

broadcasting, by the device, the wireless signal hiding the first public SSID; and

broadcasting, by the device, another wireless signal including a second public SSID that has not been previously associated with any wireless identifier in the registry database.

9. The method of claim 8 , where

the device is a wireless access point.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

executing an access point manager to query the registry database.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

broadcasting other wireless signals hiding other public SSIDs associated with other ADSSs.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

including the wireless identifier and associated ADSS in a record in the registry database, when the wireless identifier did not match any record in the registry database.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

prompting the wireless device to display one or more prompts to begin a registration process, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database.

14. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

performing actions associated with the ADSS including at least one of granting internet access, tracking bandwidth usage, and setting up connection usage policies.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions, the instructions comprising:

one or more instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

broadcast a wireless signal including a first public service set identifier (SSID);

receive a connection request from a wireless device detecting the first public SSID,

the connection request containing a wireless identifier associated with the wireless device;

query a registry database using the wireless identifier associated with the wireless device,

the registry database storing at least wireless identifiers;

associate the first public SSID as a first Authorized Device Specific SSID (ADSS) with the wireless device, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database;

broadcast the wireless signal hiding the first public SSID; and

broadcast another wireless signal including a second public SSID that has not been previously associated with any wireless identifier in the registry database.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , where the one or more instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

execute an access point manager application to communicate with the registry database.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , where the one or more instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

broadcast other wireless signals hiding other public SSIDs associated with other ADSSs.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , where the one or more instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

include the wireless identifier and associated ADSS as a record in the registry database, when the wireless identifier did not match any record in the registry database.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , where the one or more instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

prompt the wireless device to display one or more prompts to begin a registration process, when the wireless identifier is not in the registry database.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , where the one or more instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

perform actions associated with the ADSS including at least one of granting internet access, tracking bandwidth usage, and setting up connection usage policies.
