Abstract

A display is integrated with a touch screen and a fingerprint sensor having a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines configured to transmit a signal into a surface of a proximally located object and a plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines oriented proximate the drive lines and electrically separated from the pickup lines to form intrinsic electrode pairs that are impedance sensitive at each of the drive and pickup proximal locations. The display may comprise an OLED display with an OLED injector layer and an OLED emissive layer disposed between the drive lines and pickup lines.

Claims (34)

1. A display device comprising an integral touch screen and fingerprint sensor over the display and comprising:

a substrate;

a driver chip;

a bottom layer above the substrate and comprising a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines that are coupled to the driver chip;

an OLED injector layer above the bottom layer;

an OLED emissive layer above the OLED injector layer; and

a top layer above the OLED emissive layer and comprising a plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines formed from transparent conductors,

wherein the OLED emissive layer is in contact with the pickup lines,

wherein each location where a pickup line overlaps a drive line forms a fingerprint sensor pixel, and

wherein the touch screen comprises a high resolution touch screen and each individual pixel of the display device corresponds to an individual fingerprint sensor pixel.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the drive lines and the pickup lines are arranged substantially perpendicularly to each other.

3. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the pickup lines are formed from indium tin oxide.

4. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises glass.

5. The display device of claim 1 , further comprising connectors configured for connecting the driver chip to a host device.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the touch screen and the fingerprint sensor share a common drive and sense circuit.

7. The display of claim 6 , wherein the OLED injector layer and the OLED emissive layer are coupled to the common drive and sense circuit by the drive lines and the pickup lines.

8. The display of claim 1 , wherein the OLED injector layer is in contact with the drive lines.

9. An OLED display device comprising an integral touch screen and a fingerprint sensor over the display and comprising:

a substrate;

a driver chip;

a bottom layer above the substrate and comprising a plurality of substantially parallel drive lines that are coupled to the driver chip;

an OLED emissive layer; and

a top layer above the bottom layer and separated from the bottom layer by a dielectric layer and comprising a plurality of substantially parallel pickup lines formed of transparent conductors,

wherein the OLED emissive layer is in contact with the pickup lines,

wherein the pickup lines are oriented transversely to the drive lines to form a two dimensional array of intrinsic electrode pairs configured as a touch screen that detects contact with a portion of the array and configured as a fingerprint sensor that detects ridge and valley features of a finger proximally located with respect to at least a portion of the array, and

wherein the touch screen and the fingerprint sensor cover an entire display area of the display device,

wherein each location where a pickup line overlaps a drive line forms a fingerprint sensor pixel and wherein the touch screen comprises a high resolution touch screen and each individual pixel of the OLED display device corresponds to an individual fingerprint sensor pixel.

10. The display device of claim 9 , wherein the OLED display device further comprises an OLED injector layer above the bottom layer, wherein the OLED emissive layer is above the OLED injector layer.

11. The display device of claim 10 , wherein the touch screen and the fingerprint sensor share a common drive and sense circuit, and wherein the OLED injector layer and the OLED emissive layer are coupled to the common drive and sense circuit by the drive lines and the pickup lines.

12. The display of claim 10 , wherein the OLED injector layer is in contact with the drive lines.

13. The display device of claim 9 , wherein the driver chip is interconnected to the top layer.

14. The display device of claim 9 , further comprising connectors configured for connecting the driver chip to a host device.

15. The display device of claim 9 , wherein the substrate is formed from glass.

16. The display device of claim 9 , wherein the touch screen and the fingerprint sensor share a common drive and sense circuit.
