Abstract

A method and apparatus are disclosed for delivering at least one agent to a wound site. The method includes the steps of providing a delivery tube having an outlet at a wound site, covering the wound site with a drape and introducing agent at an agent inlet port of the delivery tube. The agent passes along the delivery tube through the drape to the wound site. The agent can be a wide variety or mixture of fluids such as but not limited to pain relief medicament, anti-biotics, saline solution and/or hydrating fluid.

Claims (31)

1. A method of delivering at least one agent to a wound site;

comprising:

covering the wound site with a drape;

introducing an agent at an agent inlet port of a delivery tube, the delivery tube having an outlet, the agent passing along the delivery tube through or under the drape to the wound site, wherein introducing the agent at the agent inlet port of the delivery tube comprises:

providing a reservoir holding a quantity of agent to the agent inlet port;

delivering the agent from the reservoir into the delivery tube, wherein the agent is released from the reservoir by providing an outlet orifice in the reservoir having a cross section selected to determine a rate of flow of the agent from the reservoir to the delivery tube, the agent being ejected from the outlet of the delivery tube to thereby deliver agent at the wound site;

subsequent to ejection of the agent at the wound site, sealing the delivery tube at an end of the delivery tube and preventing the passage of fluid therethrough, wherein the end of the delivery tube comprises a filter; and

closing an inlet valve on the delivery tube and removing the reservoir.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to introduction of the agent, opening the inlet valve of the delivery tube.

3. The method as claimed in claim 2 , further comprising:

opening the inlet valve by releasing a pinch clamp secured to the delivery tube.

4. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to introduction of the agent, removing a securing cap from the end of the delivery tube comprising the filter.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

determining when the agent is released from the reservoir via a preset mechanical or electrical time release system carried by the reservoir.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

introducing agent by connecting a drip to the agent inlet port of the delivery tube.

7. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to covering the wound site with the drape, locating a drain of a topical negative pressure (TNP) system proximate to a wound bed region of the wound site.

8. The method according to claim 7 , further comprising:

repeatedly or continuously applying TNP to the wound site.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said delivery tube is T-shaped.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the agent is selected from the group consisting of a pain relief medicament, an anti-biotic medicament, a saline solution and a hydrating fluid.

11. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

delivering agent at predetermined intervals according to a treatment schedule.

12. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising delivering agent to the wound site repeatedly.

13. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising delivering agent to the wound site continuously.

14. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the delivery tube at the wound site by passing a portion of the delivery tube through a port in the drape or by pinching a portion of the drape around a portion of the delivery tube.

15. The method according to claim 14 , further comprising passing a penetrating portion of the delivery tube through the drape and securing the delivery tube to the drape via an adhesive layer.
