Abstract

A manipulation assembly includes a delivery catheter having a lumen extending therethrough and a deployment catheter positioned within the delivery catheter. The deployment catheter is independently manipulatable with respect to the delivery catheter. The assembly further includes a visualization element extendable distally beyond the deployment catheter and an ablation probe comprising an energy transmitting surface positionable to ablate tissue adjacent to a distal end of the ablation probe. The ablation probe is extendable distally beyond the deployment catheter.

Claims (27)

1. A manipulation assembly comprising:

a delivery catheter having a lumen extending therethrough, the delivery catheter being manipulatable within multiple planes;

a deployment catheter positioned within the lumen of the delivery catheter, the deployment catheter being independently manipulatable with respect to the delivery catheter, the deployment catheter including a first lumen and a second lumen, wherein an illumination beam is configured to extend from the deployment catheter, the illumination beam being manipulatable with respect to the delivery catheter;

an elongate, flexible visualization element positioned within the first lumen of the deployment catheter and extendable distally beyond the delivery catheter, the visualization element being articulatable with respect to the delivery catheter; and

an ablation probe positioned within the second lumen of the deployment catheter, the ablation probe being extendable distally beyond the deployment catheter and positionable off-axis with respect to a longitudinal axis of the delivery catheter.

2. The manipulation assembly of claim 1 , wherein the deployment catheter is steerable.

3. The manipulation assembly of claim 2 , wherein the deployment catheter is steered via pulling at least one wire.

4. The manipulation assembly of claim 3 , wherein the deployment catheter is steered via computer control.

5. The manipulation assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a conical membrane projectable distally from the deployment catheter, the conical membrane defining an open area.

6. The manipulation assembly of claim 5 , wherein the open area is in fluid communication with at least one lumen extending through the deployment catheter and with an environment external to the conical membrane.

7. The manipulation assembly of claim 5 , further comprising a distal membrane positioned along a plane that is orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the delivery catheter, the distal membrane having an aperture.

8. The manipulation assembly of claim 7 , wherein the aperture is sized so as to allow the ablation probe to pass through.

9. The manipulation assembly of claim 1 , wherein the visualization element includes a camera.

10. The manipulation assembly of claim 1 , wherein the visualization element includes an optical fiber.

11. A method comprising:

positioning a distal end of a delivery catheter adjacent a tissue region, the delivery catheter being manipulatable within multiple planes;

passing a deployment catheter through the delivery catheter, the deployment catheter being independently steerable from the delivery catheter, the deployment catheter including a first lumen and a second lumen, wherein an illumination beam is configured to extend from the deployment catheter, the illumination beam being manipulatable with respect to the delivery catheter;

extending an ablation probe through the first lumen of the deployment catheter and from a distal end of the deployment catheter, the ablation probe being positionable off-axis with respect to a longitudinal axis of the delivery catheter;

ablating the tissue region with the ablation probe; and

visualizing the tissue region with an elongate, flexible visualization element while ablating the tissue region, the visualization element being articulatable with respect to the delivery catheter, the visualization element being positioned within the second lumen of the delivery catheter.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the deployment catheter is positioned via a pullwire.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the deployment catheter is positioned via computer control.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the delivery catheter is steered via a pullwire.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the delivery catheter is steered via computer control.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising expanding a conical membrane from a low-profile delivery configuration to an expanded configuration, the conical membrane being positioned at a distal end of the deployment catheter.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the conical membrane comprises a distal membrane connected to a distal circumference of the conical membrane, the distal membrane having an aperture.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising extending the ablation probe through the aperture before ablating the tissue region.
