Abstract

Claims (67)

1. A method performed by one or more computing systems for ensuring that a transfer of ownership of a lottery ticket of a jurisdiction complies with jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction, the method comprising:

receiving from a computing device of a first player a purchase request for the lottery ticket, wherein the purchase request specifies a lottery game for which the lottery ticket is being purchased, a second player, and a message to the second player;

issuing the lottery tickets with the first player being an owner of the lottery ticket:

accessing rules defining the jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction:

for each rule, verifying that the transfer of the lottery ticket to the second player complies with the rule using the computing device of the first player;

upon verifying that each rule is complied with:

generating a transfer notification that includes the message and an indication that the lottery ticket is being transferred from the first player to the second player;

sending the transfer notification to a computing device of the second player;

receiving an acceptance notification that the second player has accepted the lottery ticket; and

upon receiving the acceptance notification, transferring the ownership of the lottery ticket to the second player:

wherein when the transfer does not comply with any of the rules or when the acceptance notification is not received, the ownership of the lottery ticket is not transferred.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second player accepts the lottery ticket by accessing a ticket management system and agreeing to taking the ownership of the lottery ticket.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ownership of the lottery ticket remains with the first player until the second player accepts the lottery ticket.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lottery ticket is transferred to multiple players, each player owning a percentage of the lottery ticket.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the computing a device of the second player a request to transfer the lottery ticket to a third player.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the computing device of the second player a request to add the lottery ticket to a group, of which the second player is a member.

7. One or more computing systems for ensuring that a transfer of ownership of a lottery ticket of a jurisdiction complies with jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction, the one or more computing systems comprising:

one or more computer-readable storage mediums storing computer-executable instructions for controlling the one or more computing systems to:

receive from a computing device of a first player a purchase request for the a lottery ticket, wherein the purchase request specifies a lottery game for which the lottery ticket is being purchased, a second player from a contact list of the first player, and a message to the second player;

access rules defining the jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction;

for each rule, verify that the transfer of the lottery ticket to the second player complies with the rule using the computing device of the first player;

upon verifying that each rule is complied with:

generate a transfer notification that includes the message and an indication that the lottery ticket is being transferred from the first player to the second player;

send the transfer notification to a computing device of the second player based on information in the contact list;

receive an acceptance notification that the second player has accepted the lottery ticket; and

upon receiving the acceptance notification, transfer the ownership of the lottery ticket to the second player;

wherein when the transfer does not comply with any of the rules or when the acceptance notification is not received, the ownership of the lottery ticket is not transferred; and

one or more processors for executing the computer-executable instructions stored in the one or more computer-readable storage mediums.

8. The one or more computing systems of claim 7 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further control the one or more computing systems to determine current location of the first player, wherein the verification of the rules is based on the current location of the first player.

9. The one or more computing systems of claim 8 , wherein the current location of the first player is determined using Global Positioning System (GPS) information acquired by a computing device of the first player.

10. The one or more computing systems of claim 9 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further control the one or more computing systems to:

receive from the computing device of the first player a geo-fence-crossing event that indicates that the computing device of the first player has crossed a geo-fence; and

in response to receiving the geo-fence-crossing event, send to the computing device of the first player an advertising packet that includes a list of lottery games that are available based on the current location of the first player.

11. One or more computing systems for ensuring that a transfer of a lottery ticket of a jurisdiction complies with jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction, the one or more computing systems comprising:

one or more computer-readable storage mediums storing computer-executable instructions for controlling the one or more computing systems to:

receive from a first player a purchase request to purchase the lottery ticket;

issue the lottery ticket to the first player;

receive from the first player a transfer request to transfer the lottery ticket to a second player;

access rules defining the jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction;

for each rule, verify that the transfer of the lottery ticket to the second player complies with the rule using a computing device of the first player;

upon verifying that each rule is complied with:

generate a transfer notification that includes an indication that the lottery ticket is being transferred from the first player to the second player;

send the transfer notification to a computing device of the second player;

receive an acceptance notification that the second player has accepted the lottery ticket; and

upon receiving the acceptance notification, transfer the lottery ticket to the second player;

wherein when the transfer does not comply with any of the rules or when the acceptance notification is not received, the lottery ticket is not transferred; and

one or more processors for executing the computer-executable instructions stored in the one or more computer-readable storage mediums.

12. The one or more computing systems of claim 11 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further control the one or more computing systems to provide fraud detection and digital right management to prevent unauthorized access to the one or more computing systems.

13. The one or more computing systems of claim 11 , wherein the computer-executable instructions further control the one or more computing systems to provide fraud detection by verifying one or more of whether a total amount of transactions from an account of the first player exceeds a certain amount in a given time period, whether the account of the first player has been involved with more than a certain number of transactions in the given time period, whether an address of the first player has been used more than a certain number of times, and whether an IP address of the computing device of the first player has been involved with more than a certain number of transactions in the given time period.

14. One or more computing systems for ensuring that a transfer of a lottery ticket of a jurisdiction complies with jurisdictional requirements of the jurisdiction, the one or more computing systems comprising:

one or more computer-readable storage mediums storing computer-executable instructions for controlling the one or more computing systems to:

receive from a first player a request to transfer a lottery ticket owned by the first player to a second player;

access rules defining the jurisdictional requirement of the jurisdiction;

for each rule, verify that the transfer of the lottery ticket to the second player compiles with the rule using a computing device of the first player;

upon verifying that each rule is complied with:

generate a transfer notification that includes an indication that the lottery ticket is being transferred from the first player to the second player;

send the transfer notification to a computing device of the second player;

receive an acceptance notification that the second player has accepted the lottery ticket; and

upon receiving the acceptance notification, transfer the lottery ticket to the second player

wherein when the transfer does not comply with any of the rules or when the acceptance notification is not received, the lottery tickets is not transferred; and

one or more processors for executing the computer-executable instructions stored in the one or more computer-readable storage mediums.

15. The one or more computing systems of claim 14 , wherein the request specifies a message to the second player.

16. The one or more computing systems of claim 14 , wherein the jurisdictional requirements include requirements regarding age of a player, location of the player, and a spending limit.

17. The one or more computing systems of claim 16 , wherein the age of the player is verified using a camera of the computing device of the player to capture a bar code appearing on an identification card of the player.

18. The one or more computing systems of claim 16 , wherein the location of the player is verified using an IP address of the computing device of the player.

19. The one or more computing systems of claim 16 , wherein the location of the player is verified using Global Positioning System (GPS) information acquired by the computing device of the player.

20. The one or more computing systems of claim 16 , wherein identifying information of the player is verified by communicating with a vendor via an application programming interface (API) of the vendor.
