Abstract

This disclosure is directed to system for transferring a substrate, such as a microscope slide, and holding the substrate within at least one device. The system includes a holder for holding the substrate and a gripper for transferring the substrate, such as between a cassette or stack and the holder. A method is also discussed herein.

Claims (28)

1. A device comprising:

a base;

a first arm comprising a proximal end connected to a first end of the base and a distal end extending from the base and at least one securing bracket comprising a notch having an obtuse angle and configured to secure a first side of a substrate;

a secure bar comprising a proximal end connected to a second end of the base and a distal end extending from the base and at least one securing bracket comprising a notch having an obtuse angle and configured to secure a second side of the substrate, wherein the second side of the substrate is opposite the first side of the substrate;

a crossbar extending for at least a portion of a distance between the first arm and the secure bar, the crossbar configured to directly contact the substrate and to deflect upon exertion of a horizontal force on the crossbar by the substrate; and

a sensor attached to the base and proximal to the crossbar to detect deflection of the crossbar, wherein the first arm and the secure bar extend in the same direction from the base.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the base, the first arm, and the secure bar form a U-shape or a J-shape.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein obtuse angle of each of the notches is formed by the angles of a first slanted facet and a second slanted facet.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first arm comprises two securing brackets, thereby providing at least three points of contact for the substrate when the secure bar is in a closed position.

5. The device of claim 1 , the secure bar further comprising:

an open position to insert the substrate into or remove the substrate from the device; and

a closed position to secure the substrate with the device.

6. The device of claim 5 , further comprising a first motor connected to the secure bar to move the secure bar from the open position to the closed position and from the closed position to the open position.

7. The device of claim 6 , further comprising a second motor connected to the base or the first arm to rotate the base, the first arm, and the secure bar collectively around a longitudinal axis.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the secure bar is attached to the base by a bearing and a fastener.

9. A system comprising:

the device of claim 1 ; and

a substrate holder.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the substrate holder comprises

a base;

a first arm comprising a proximal end connected to a first end of the base and a distal end extending from the base; and

a second arm comprising a proximal end connected to a second end of the base and a distal end extending from the base,

wherein the first and second arms of the substrate holder extend in the same direction from the base.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first arm of the substrate holder further comprises at least one securing block, wherein the second arm of the substrate holder further comprises at least one securing block, and wherein each securing block comprises a ramp and stopper.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the securing blocks further comprise a main body comprising the ramp and the stopper.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first and second devices are independently connected to a scanner, a fluorescent microscope, a picking device, a scanner with a picking device, or a fluorescent microscope with a picking device.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the crossbar extends from the first arm of the device to a side of the base of the device proximal to the secure bar of the device.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the substrate holder is a cassette.
