Abstract

An audio/video (A/V) hub includes a state-detection circuit coupled to at least one pin in a high-definition multimedia-interface input connector, which can electrically couple to an entertainment device. When electrically coupled to the entertainment device, the state-detection circuit establishes a ground loop between the electronic device and the entertainment device. A control circuit in the A/V hub detects whether there is electrical coupling with the entertainment device using the state-detection circuit. When the electrical coupling is detected, the control circuit provides a set of first control commands associated with different types of entertainment devices until, in response, content activity is detected via the input connector. Moreover, when the content activity is detected, the control circuit provides a set of second control commands associated with different providers of entertainment devices until a change in a state of the entertainment device is detected via the input connector and the state-detection circuit.

Claims (36)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

an input connector configured to electrically couple to an entertainment device;

a state-detection circuit coupled to the input connector, wherein the state-detection circuit is configured to detect the electrical coupling by, at least in part, establishing a ground loop between the electronic device and the entertainment device; and

a control circuit electrically coupled to the input connector, configured to:

detect whether there is electrical coupling between the entertainment device and the input connector using the state-detection circuit, wherein the state-detection circuit is configured to detect the electrical coupling using a subset of signal lines associated with the input connector and the subset comprises a shield and excludes a data line, a clock line and a control line; and

when the electrical coupling is detected, identify a type of the entertainment device by providing a set of first control commands associated with different types of entertainment devices until, in response, content activity is detected via the input connector.

The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein, when the electrical coupling between the entertainment device and the input connector is detected, the control circuit is configured to attempt to identify the entertainment device by providing consumer-electronics-control commands for the entertainment device; and

wherein, when the attempt is unsuccessful, the control circuit is configured to provide the set of first control commands.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the input connector is compatible with a high-definition multimedia-interface (HDMI) standard.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the set of first control commands comprises one or more of: power-on control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices; and power-off control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the set of first commands comprise one or more of: a play command for the different types of entertainment devices; and a trick-mode command for the different types of entertainment devices.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the content activity comprises content that is at least one of: provided and received by the entertainment device.

The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein, when the content activity is detected, the control circuit is configured to identify the entertainment device by providing a set of second control commands associated with different providers of entertainment devices until a change in a state of the entertainment device is detected via the input connector and the state-detection circuit.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit comprises:

a processor coupled to the input connector; and

a memory, coupled to the processor, which stores a program module, wherein, when executed by the processor, the program module causes the electronic device to perform the detecting, the selective providing of the set of first control commands and the selective providing of the set of second control commands.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for use in conjunction with an electronic device, the computer-readable storage medium storing a program module that, when executed by the electronic device, causes the electronic device to identify an entertainment device by performing one or more operations comprising:

detecting whether there is electrical coupling between the entertainment device and an input connector in the electronic device, wherein the detecting involves a state-detection circuit, wherein the state-detection circuit detects the electrical coupling using a subset of signal lines associated with the input connector and the subset comprises a shield and excludes a data line, a clock line and a control line, and wherein the state-detection circuit detects the electrical coupling by, at least in part, establishing a ground loop between the electronic device and the entertainment device; and

when the electrical coupling is detected, identifying the entertainment device by providing a set of first control commands associated with different types of entertainment devices until, in response, content activity is detected via the input connector.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the one or more operations comprise attempting, when the electrical coupling between the entertainment device and the input connector is detected, to identify the entertainment device by providing consumer-electronics-control commands for the entertainment device; and

wherein, when the attempt is unsuccessful, the providing the set of first control commands is performed.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the input connector is compatible with a high-definition multimedia-interface (HDMI) standard.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the set of first control commands comprises one or more of: power-on control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices; and power-off control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the set of first commands comprise one or more of: a play command for the different types of entertainment devices; and a trick-mode command for the different types of entertainment devices.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the content activity comprises content that is at least one of: provided and received by the entertainment device.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein, when the content activity is detected, the one or more operations comprise identifying the entertainment device by providing a set of second control commands associated with different providers of entertainment devices until a change in a state of the entertainment device is detected via the input connector and the state-detection circuit.

16. A method for identifying an entertainment device, wherein the method comprises:

by an electronic device:

detecting whether there is electrical coupling between the entertainment device and an input connector in the electronic device, wherein the detecting involves a state-detection circuit, wherein the state-detection circuit detects the electrical coupling using a subset of signal lines associated with the input connector and the subset comprises a shield and excludes a data line, a clock line and a control line, and wherein the state-detection circuit detects the electrical coupling by, at least in part, establishing a ground loop between the electronic device and the entertainment device; and

when the electrical coupling is detected, identifying the entertainment device by providing a set of first control commands associated with different types of entertainment devices until, in response, content activity is detected via the input connector.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the method comprises attempting, when the electrical coupling between the entertainment device and the input connector is detected, to identify the entertainment device by providing consumer-electronics-control commands for the entertainment device; and

wherein, when the attempt is unsuccessful, the providing the set of first control commands is performed.

The method of claim 16 , wherein, when the content activity is detected, providing a set of second control commands associated with different providers of entertainment devices until a change in a state of the entertainment device is detected via the input connector and the state-detection circuit.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the input connector is compatible with a high- definition multimedia-interface (HDMI) standard.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the set of first control commands comprises one or more of: power-on control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices; and power-off control commands for the different providers of entertainment devices.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein, when the content activity is detected, the method comprises identifying the entertainment device by providing a set of second control commands associated with different providers of entertainment devices until a change in a state of the entertainment device is detected via the input connector and the state-detection circuit.
