Abstract

A fuel dispensing unit includes a fuel conduit including an external annular bead and a locking member including inwardly extending resilient tongues. The locking member is configured to retain the fuel conduit in a locked position and to receive the fuel conduit in an open position. The external annular bead of the fuel conduit causes the locking member to move to the open position when the locking member receives the fuel conduit.

Claims (27)

1. A fuel dispensing unit comprising:

a fuel conduit comprising an outer surface and an external annular bead; and

a locking member comprising a main body and a plurality of inwardly extending resilient tongues disposed radially around an opening in the main body configured to receive the fuel conduit, each of the plurality of resilient tongues being configured to allow the fuel conduit to pass through the opening in a first direction and being configured to prevent the fuel conduit from passing through the opening in a second direction, each of the plurality of resilient tongues extending from the main body at an angle in the first direction, each of the plurality of resilient tongues having top and bottom angled surfaces and a terminal surface, the terminal surface extending directly between the top and bottom angled surfaces and configured to sit flush against only the outer surface of the fuel conduit adjacent the external annular bead when the fuel conduit and the locking member are connected.

The fuel dispensing unit of claim 1 , wherein the fuel conduit further comprises a second external annular bead, wherein an O-ring is disposed between the two external annular beads, and wherein the two external annular beads and the O-ring are arranged to engage the plurality of resilient tongues when the fuel conduit passes through the opening.

3. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 2 , wherein an end portion of each resilient tongue is formed by a material having a degree of hardness being less than a degree of hardness of a material forming the O-ring.

4. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of resilient tongues has an obtuse edge with an obtuse angle greater than 100 degrees.

5. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of resilient tongues has an obtuse edge with an obtuse angle greater than 130 degrees.

6. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 1 , wherein the resilient tongues are monolithic with the main body.

7. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of resilient tongues are angled between about 20 degrees and about 30 degrees related to an axis perpendicular to the main body.

8. A fuel dispensing unit comprising:

a fuel conduit comprising an external annular bead made from a first material; and

a locking member having a main body defining an opening therethrough and one or more rigid tongues extending into the opening and formed of a second material that is of a different hardness than the first material, each of the rigid tongue extending entirely along an axis at a non-zero angle from the main body into the opening and having a terminal surface being entirely radially inward facing and being configured to sit flush against an outer surface of the fuel conduit,

wherein the external annular bead of the fuel conduit is configured to cause the rigid tongues to move radially outward when the fuel conduit is inserted into the opening, and an end portion of each rigid tongue is configured to secure the fuel conduit in place relative to the locking member after the fuel conduit has been inserted into the opening.

9. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein the fuel conduit further comprises a second external annular bead, wherein an O-ring is disposed between the two external annular beads.

10. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein each of the rigid tongues have an obtuse angle on an end portion thereof, the obtuse angle being greater than 100 degrees.

11. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein each of the rigid tongues have an obtuse angle on an end portion thereof, the obtuse angle being greater than 130 degrees.

12. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein the rigid tongues are monolithic with the main body.

13. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein the second material of the rigid tongues is softer than the first material of the external annular bead.

The fuel dispensing unit of claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more rigid tongues is directly connected to and directly extending from a radially inward facing surface forming the opening in the main body, and the one or more rigid tongues are configured to prevent the fuel conduit from contacting the opening.

15. A fuel dispensing unit comprising:

a fuel conduit comprising an external annular bead; and

a locking member having a main body with a planar surface located at an axially outward facing end of the locking member and planar fingers circumferentially disposed about the fuel conduit, each finger having a top surface, a bottom surface opposite the top surface, and a terminal-most end surface extending therebetween, the locking member having a slidable position configured to allow only the bottom surface and the end surface of each finger to engage the fuel conduit to allow slidable movement of the fuel conduit relative to the locking member, and a locked position configured to allow only the end surface of each finger to engage an outer surface of the fuel conduit to prevent slidable movement of the fuel conduit relative to the locking member, the fingers extending at an angle directly from the planar surface of the main body in a direction of the slidable movement of the fuel conduit relative to the locking member.

16. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 15 , wherein the fingers are biased to the locked position.

The fuel dispensing unit of claim 15 , wherein the fuel conduit further comprises a second external annular bead, wherein an O-ring is disposed between the two external annular beads, and wherein the two external annular beads and the O-ring are arranged to engage the fingers to move the locking member between the slidable position and the locked position.

18. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 17 , wherein an end portion of each finger is formed by a material having a degree of hardness being less than a degree of hardness of a material forming the O-ring.

19. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 15 , wherein the bottom surface and the end surface define an angle therebetween that is greater than 100 degrees.

20. The fuel dispensing unit of claim 15 , wherein the bottom surface and the end surface define an angle therebetween that is greater than 130 degrees.
