Abstract

A camera housing includes an integrated expansion module for providing expanded functionality to a camera (e.g., a display screen). Different embodiments of the housing include different expansion modules for adding a variety of features to the camera when the camera is placed in the housing. Thus, a user may modify features of a camera by swapping the housing. Furthermore, a user may add a feature to an existing camera without needing to purchase a new camera.

Claims (49)

1. A camera expansion device, comprising:

a housing including a fastening structure configured to removably secure the housing to an imaging device;

an expansion module disposed within the housing, the expansion module configured to expand functionality of the imaging device;

a cavity formed by sides of the housing, the cavity configured to receive and secure a surface of the imaging device within the housing; and

an interface positioned near an edge of the cavity, the interface configured to facilitate data communications between the camera expansion device and the imaging device.

2. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , wherein the fastening structure snaps together with a corresponding fastening structure of the imaging device.

3. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , wherein the interface facilitates the data communications when the interface is removably coupled to a corresponding interface of the imaging device.

4. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , wherein the interface is an electrical connector.

5. The camera expansion device of claim 4 , wherein the electrical connector comprises an expansion interface cable.

6. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , wherein the interface is one of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface, a mini USB, a micro USB, a serial interface, a parallel interface, a Firewire interface, an Ethernet interface, a wireless interface, or a Bluetooth interface.

7. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , wherein the expansion module includes any of a power supply, a display screen, a shot positioning module, a wireless module, a storage module, an audio capture module, a data acquisition module, an image processing module, a night vision module, and an expansion input/output (I/O) module.

8. The camera expansion device of claim 7 , wherein the data acquisition module includes any of an accelerometer, an altimeter, a clock, a thermometer, a humidity sensor, a barometer, a heart rate meter, and a light sensor.

9. The camera expansion device of claim 7 , wherein the data acquisition module captures information associated with captured media and stores the information within the captured media.

10. The camera expansion device of claim 9 , wherein the data acquisition module captures GPS data to automatically insert a position stamp on the captured media, the position stamp indicating a location associated with the captured media.

11. The camera expansion device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an expansion function button.

12. A camera system, comprising:

a modular display-less imaging device, comprising:

a lens,

a processor, and

a connector;

a camera expansion device configured to removably couple to the modular display-less imaging device in a first configuration enabling a first set of camera functionality, the camera expansion device comprising:

a housing,

a storage module disposed in the housing, the storage module configured to provide additional storage space for storing captured images, video, or images and video,

an audio capture module disposed in the housing, the audio capture module configured to capture, store, or capture and store audio data,

a cavity within the housing, the cavity configured to receive the connector of the modular display-less imaging device, and

an interface within the cavity; and

a mounting device configured to removably couple to the modular display-less imaging device in a second configuration enabling a second set of camera functionality.

13. The camera system of claim 12 , wherein when the cavity receives the connector, the modular display-less imaging device is substantially flush with the camera expansion device.

14. The camera system of claim 12 , wherein the interface is configured to facilitate data communications between the camera expansion device and the modular display-less imaging device when the interface is removably coupled to a corresponding interface of the modular display-less imaging device.

15. A camera system, comprising:

a modular display-less imaging device, comprising:

a lens,

a processor, and

a connector;

a first camera expansion device configured to removably couple to the modular display-less imaging device in a first configuration enabling a first set of camera functionality, the first camera expansion device comprising:

a first housing,

a display on a surface of the first housing, the display configured to add display functions to the modular display-less imaging device,

a first cavity within the first housing, the first cavity configured to receive the connector of the modular display-less imaging device, and

a first interface within the first cavity; and

a second camera expansion device configured to removably couple to the modular display-less imaging device in a second configuration enabling a second set of camera functionality, the second camera expansion device comprising:

a second housing,

a power supply disposed in the second housing, the power supply configured to power the modular display-less imaging device,

a second cavity within the second housing, the second cavity configured to receive the connector of the modular display-less imaging device, and

a second interface within the second cavity.

16. The camera system of claim 15 , wherein the first set of camera functionality and the second set of camera functionality enable at least one different functionality.

17. The camera system of claim 15 , wherein the modular display-less imaging device is configured to mount to a vehicle in a first mountable configuration, further wherein the modular display-less imaging device is configured to mount to one of a user's body, garment, or other user apparatus in a second mountable configuration.

18. The camera system of claim 15 , wherein a user can interchange the first camera expansion device with the second camera expansion device to enable the second set of camera functionality after using the first set of camera functionality.

19. The camera system of claim 15 , wherein the data acquisition module records data associated with media content and stores the data within the media content to provide a user with information associated with a captured scene.
