Abstract

A clip includes a body and a pin. The body includes a first end, a second end, and a backspan extending between the first and second ends. The backspan defines a through hole. Each of the first and second ends of the body are configured to releasably couple to a rail of a dynamic spinal clip between two adjacent segments of a dynamic spinal clip to maintain a span between two adjacent segments. The pin defines a longitudinal axis and includes a head and a shaft. The shaft extends from the head to a tip. The tip is configured to penetrate bone. The shaft is configured and dimensioned to be slidably received through the through hole of the body. The head is sized to prevent the head from passing through the through hole of the body.

Claims (15)

1. A method of spinal surgery comprising:

inserting a dynamic spinal plate into a surgical site, the dynamic spinal plate including a first segment and a second segment;

maintaining a span between the first and second segments of the dynamic spinal plate with a clip between the first and second segments;

securing the first segment of the dynamic spinal plate to a first vertebra;

securing the second segment of the dynamic spinal plate to a second vertebra; and

pulling a pin of the clip away from the surgical site to remove the clip from the first and second segments as the pin is pulled from the surgical site.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising impacting a head of the pin of the clip to partially secure the dynamic spinal plate to at least one of the first and second vertebrae before securing the first and second segments.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein pulling the pin of the clip away from the surgical site includes engaging a backspan of the clip with a portion of the pin.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein engaging a backspan of the clip with the portion of the pin includes engaging the backspan of the clip with a disc secured about a shaft of the pin to release first and second end portions of the clip from the dynamic spinal plate.

5. A method of spinal surgery comprising:

inserting a dynamic spinal plate into a surgical site, the dynamic spinal plate including a first segment and a second segment;

maintaining a span between the first and second segments of the dynamic spinal plate with a body of a clip between the first and second segments, the body including a first end portion and a second end portion interconnected by a backspan;

securing the first segment of the dynamic spinal plate to a first vertebra;

securing the second segment of the dynamic spinal plate to a second vertebra; and

pulling a pin of the clip away from the surgical site to remove the clip from the dynamic spinal plate, the pin including a head, a shaft, and a tip, the shaft extending from the head to the tip, the shaft slidably received through a through hole defined by the backspan and the head sized to inhibit the head from passing through the through hole, a disc disposed about the shaft and having a constant inner dimension larger than a diameter of the through hole to retain the pin within the through hole of the body, the entire backspan of the clip positioned between the disc and the head.
