Abstract

Tissue fasteners carried on a tissue piercing deployment wire fasten tissue layers of a mammalian body together include a first member, a second member, and a connecting member extending between the first and second members. One of the first and second members has an elongated slot permitting fastener deployment while avoiding excessive tissue compression.

Claims (17)

1. A method for implanting a tissue fastener into a fold of tissue, comprising:

providing a tissue fastener having a first member and a second member, each of the first member and the second member having a first end and a second end, and a connecting member connects the first member and the second member;

sliding a tissue piercing deployment wire through a channel extending through the first member and through the first end and the second end of the first member;

sliding the tissue piercing deployment wire and the fastener into a guide tube, the second member of the fastener being positioned inside the guide tube next to the first member;

inserting a pusher rod into the guide tube and into contact with the first member of the fastener;

advancing the tissue piercing deployment wire through a first tissue layer and a second tissue layer;

advancing the pusher rod through the guide tube and thereby advancing the fastener by pushing on the first member which slides on the tissue piercing deployment wire;

pushing the first member and a portion of the connecting member with the pusher rod so that the first member extends through the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer; and

as the second member engages the first tissue layer, the pusher rod is retracted and the tissue piercing deployment wire disengages from the first member so that the first member and the connecting member extends completely through the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer with the second member positioned on the first tissue layer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue piercing deployment wire snaps into and out of an elongated slot extending from the first end to the second end of the first member.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the elongated slot opens into the channel of the first member.

The method of claim 3 , wherein the elongated slot has a first width that is less than a diameter of the tissue piercing deployment wire, and a second width that expands and is equal to or greater than the diameter of the tissue piercing deployment wire as the wire is snapped into and out of the elongated slot and into the channel.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first member is a flexible tube that expands and contracts when the tissue piercing deployment wire is snapped into and out of the elongated slot.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the tissue piercing deployment wire snaps out of the elongated slot to release the first member so that the first member and the second member are positioned on opposite sides of the fold of tissue with the connector member extending through the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first member is parallel to the second member and perpendicular to the connector member after deployment into the fold of tissue.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein the tissue piercing wire and the pusher rod are withdrawn proximally in the guide tube.

9. The method of claim 2 , wherein the tissue piercing wire has a pointed tip that pierces the first tissue layer and the second tissue layer.
