Abstract

A clock comprises an alarm clock housing having a front face, a clock display occupying at least a portion of the front face, a control on the housing for activating a shade positioning function, and a processor within the housing. The processor is responsive to the control for generating at least one shade positioning command to be transmitted to at least one motorized window shade, so as to cause the motorized window shade to move to one or more position at one or more corresponding predetermined interval relative to an alarm time.

Claims (46)

1. An apparatus for generating an alarm, the apparatus comprising:

means for receiving an alarm time;

means for determining one or more time intervals relative to the alarm time;

means for transmitting at least one shade positioning command, so as to cause a shade to move to one or more positions at the one or more time intervals relative to the alarm time; and

means for generating an audio alarm that gradually increases in volume.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the means for receiving an alarm time includes a mobile device dock configured to connect to a port of a mobile device.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the means for generating an audio alarm is configured to begin sounding the audio alarm at a first one of the time intervals after the alarm time.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a communications interface configured to couple the apparatus to a mobile device, wherein the apparatus includes a processor, and the processor is configured to detect when the mobile device is coupled to the apparatus for transmitting information to the apparatus.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the apparatus is configured to receive the alarm time from the mobile device and to store an internal alarm time, and the processor is configured to generate the at least one shade positioning command at the internal alarm time, if the processor does not detect any mobile device coupled to the apparatus.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the communications interface is a wireless interface.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a housing containing the apparatus,

wherein the means for transmitting includes a wireless communications interface within the housing and coupled to a processor for transmitting the at least one shade positioning command from the processor to the shade;

wherein the processor is configured to provide dimmer commands to a dimmer via the first communications interface at an end of each respective time interval, to cause the dimmer to set at least one electrical light at a respective level at a predetermined time relative to the alarm time.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the means for determining one or more time intervals is configured to calculate an end of each respective time interval based on the alarm time, such that the shade is partially open prior to the alarm time and in an open position at the alarm time.

9. An apparatus for generating an alarm, the apparatus comprising:

means for receiving an alarm time;

means for determining one or more time intervals relative to the alarm time;

means for transmitting at least one shade positioning command, so as to cause a shade to move to one or more positions at the one or more time intervals relative to the alarm time; and

means for generating an audio alarm upon passage of a predetermined amount of time after the alarm time.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a first control and a second control, wherein:

the means for generating an audio alarm is responsive to the first control for activating or deactivating the audio alarm, and

the means for transmitting at least one shade positioning command is responsive to the second control for activating or deactivating transmission of the at least one shade positioning command, and

the first control and the second control are capable of being set independently of each other.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising

a housing containing the apparatus, and

a snooze control on the housing, wherein activation of the snooze control interrupts the audio alarm and moves the shade to a snooze position for a predetermined period, and resumes the audio alarm and returns the shade to a partially open or open position when the predetermined period has ended.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a light sensor configured to provide a light level signal, and means, responsive to the light level signal, for determining at a respective time corresponding to each respective shade positioning command whether a light level corresponding to the light level signal is lower than a threshold value, and transmitting a respective dimmer command to a dimmer if the light level is lower than the threshold value.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising a housing containing the apparatus, wherein the light sensor is in or on the housing.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus includes a processor, and the processor is configured to access a daily sunrise time from the Internet, and transmit a respective dimmer command corresponding to each time interval to a dimmer, to control an electric light if the alarm time is earlier than the daily sunrise time.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus includes a processor, and the processor is configured to transmit a respective dimmer command corresponding to each time interval to a dimmer to control an electric light.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the apparatus includes a processor, and the processor is configured to detect when a mobile device storing the alarm time is in close proximity to the clock and request the alarm time from the mobile device upon detecting that the mobile device is in close proximity to the apparatus.

17. A clock, comprising:

a housing;

a first control on the housing for setting an audible alarm;

a second control on the housing for setting a sequence of shade commands,

a processor within the housing, the processor configured for:

causing the audible alarm to sound at one or more predetermined intervals relative to an alarm time, in response to the first control being set, and

generating at least two shade commands to be transmitted wirelessly to at least one shade at respective transmission times, so as to cause the at least one shade to move to respective positions at one or more predetermined intervals relative to the alarm time, in response to the second control being set; and

a wireless communications interface within the housing and coupled to the processor for transmitting the at least two shade commands to the at least one shade.

18. The clock of claim 17 , further comprising a non-transitory, machine readable storage medium storing lighting association information for a lighting control to enable the lighting control to change a light level in response to commands from the processor at the one or more predetermined intervals relative to the alarm time.

19. The clock of claim 18 , further comprising a second communications interface within the housing and coupled to the processor for transmitting the commands to the lighting control.

20. The clock of claim 17 , further comprising a light sensor for measuring a light level, wherein the processor is configured for determining at the one or more predetermined intervals relative to the alarm time whether the light level is lower than a threshold value, and transmitting a dimmer command to a dimmer if the light level is lower than the threshold value.

21. The clock of claim 18 , further comprising a third control on the housing, wherein the processor is configured for causing transmission of the commands at the one or more predetermined intervals relative to the alarm time, in response to the third control being set.

22. The clock of claim 17 , wherein the processor is configured to receive a sunrise time from the Internet and determine the alarm time based on the sunrise time.
