Abstract

A head is disclosed for use with a continuous manufacturing system. The head may have a housing configured to receive a matrix and a continuous fiber, and a diverter located at an end of the housing. The diverter may be configured to divert radially outward a matrix-coated fiber. The head may also include a cutoff having an edge configured to press the matrix-coated fiber against the diverter.

Claims (31)

1. A head for a continuous manufacturing system, comprising:

a housing configured to receive a matrix and at least one continuous fiber, form an at least one continuous matrix-coated fiber by coating the at least one continuous fiber with the matrix, and discharge a composite hollow tubular structure comprised of the at least one continuous matrix-coated fiber;

a diverter located at an end of the housing and being configured to divert radially outward the at least one continuous matrix-coated fiber;

a cutoff having an edge configured to press the at least one continuous matrix-coated fiber against the diverter;

a cure enhancer mounted downstream of a cutting location of the cutoff and configured to facilitate hardening of the composite hollow tubular structure at a location downstream of the cutting location; and

wherein the at least one continuous matrix-coated fiber comprises a plurality of continuous matrix-coated fibers,

wherein the diverter diverts the plurality of continuous matrix-coated fibers radially outward to form the composite hollow tubular structure, and

wherein the cutoff is configured to terminate the composite hollow tubular structure before the composite hollow tubular structure is hardened by the cure enhancer.

2. The head of claim 1 , wherein the cutoff annularly surrounds the housing.

3. The head of claim 2 , wherein the cutoff is ring-like.

4. The head of claim 2 , wherein:

the diverter is bell-shaped; and

the edge of the cutoff is configured to press the plurality of continuous matrix-coated fibers against a downstream mouth of the diverter.

5. The head of claim 1 , wherein:

the diverter is selectively movable relative to the housing to adjust a wall thickness of the composite hollow tubular structure; and

the edge of the cutoff is configured to press the plurality of continuous matrix-coated fibers against the diverter as the diverter is moved into the housing.

6. The head of claim 5 , wherein movement of the diverter into the housing reduces a wall thickness of the composite hollow tubular structure at a time of fiber severing.

7. The head of claim 5 , wherein movement of the diverter into the housing clamps the plurality of continuous matrix-coated fibers in a gap between the diverter and the housing.

8. The head of claim 1 , further including an actuator connecting the cutoff to the housing and configured to move the edge of the cutoff in an axial direction toward the diverter.

9. The head of claim 1 , wherein the housing has an internal cavity configured to hold a supply of the matrix for coating the at least one continuous fiber.

10. A system for continuously manufacturing a composite hollow tubular structure, comprising:

a support capable of moving in a plurality of directions; and

a head coupled to the support and configured to discharge a composite hollow tubular structure comprised of a flow of continuous matrix-coated fibers during movement of the support, the head including:

a housing;

a diverter disposed at least partially within an end of the housing and configured to divert radially outward the continuous matrix-coated fibers to form the composite hollow tubular structure;

a cure enhancer configured to facilitate hardening of the composite hollow tubular structure;

a cutoff annularly disposed around the housing having an edge configured to press the continuous matrix-coated fibers against the diverter; and

a first actuator configured to selectively move the cutoff in an axial direction toward the diverter to cut the continuous matrix-coated fibers at a location upstream of the cure enhancer thereby terminating the composite hollow tubular structure before the composite hollow tubular structure is hardened by the cure enhancer.

11. The system of claim 10 , further including a second actuator configured to axially move the diverter toward the housing, thereby reducing a wall thickness of the composite hollow tubular structure in coordination with the first actuator moving the cutoff to cut the continuous matrix-coated fibers.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein movement of the diverter toward the housing clamps the continuous matrix-coated fibers in a gap between the diverter and the housing.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the support is configured to move the head during discharge of the continuous matrix-coated fibers, such that the composite hollow tubular structure has a three-dimensional axis.
