Abstract

A method for determining reflectivity of a tear film lipid layer of a patient and recommending a course of treatment based on the same. The method includes the steps of: measuring a tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum using a wavelength-dependent optical interferometer; converting the measured tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum to a calculated absolute reflectance spectrum; comparing the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum to a theoretical absolute lipid reflectance spectrum to determine a tear film lipid layer thickness; and determining a reflectivity value for the tear film lipid layer thickness at a first wavelength of light corresponding to ultraviolet, violet, or blue light.

Claims (16)

1. A method for selecting an intraocular lens for a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

determining a tear film lipid layer thickness for the patient using a wave-length dependent optical interferometer;

determining a reflectivity value for the tear film lipid layer thickness at a first wavelength of light corresponding to ultraviolet, violet, or blue light; and

identifying an intraocular lens for attenuating or blocking at least one wavelength of light corresponding to the ultraviolet, violet, or blue light.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the tear film lipid layer thickness for the patient comprises:

measuring a tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum using the wavelength-dependent optical interferometer;

converting the measured tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum to a calculated absolute reflectance spectrum; and

comparing the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum to a theoretical absolute lipid reflectance spectrum to determine the tear film lipid layer thickness.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum is calculated based on wavelength-dependent refractive indices for air, lipid, and aqueous phases and wherein the wavelength-dependent refractive indices for lipid are based upon a Sellmeier equation form.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein converting the measured tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum to the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum comprises multiplying the measured tear film aqueous plus lipid layer relative reflectance spectrum at a plurality of wavelengths times an absolute reference spectrum for reference material obtained at the plurality of wavelengths.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein comparing the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum to the theoretical absolute lipid reflectance spectrum comprises iteratively comparing the calculated absolute reflectance spectrum to a plurality of theoretical absolute lipid reflectance spectra.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first wavelength of light corresponds to UVA light, and wherein the method further comprises:

determining a reflectivity value for the tear film lipid layer thickness at a second wavelength of light corresponding to UVB light, a third wavelength of light corresponding to violet light, and a fourth wavelength of light corresponding to blue light;

adding together the reflectivity values for the first and second wavelengths of light to produce a UV light sum;

adding together the reflectivity values for the third and fourth wavelengths of light to produce a visible light sum; and

comparing the UV light sum and the visible light sum to reference values to identify an intraocular lens for attenuating or blocking the at least one wavelength of light corresponding to ultraviolet, violet, or blue light.
