Abstract

A gaming machine that includes a game controller to select symbols from the memory, cause the display to display the selected symbols at the display positions, determine if the displayed symbols include a predetermined symbol, and if the predetermined symbol lands on the pay line, in response to the predetermined symbol landing on the pay line, 1) cause the display to animate the first plurality of anticipation states on the pay line, and 2) randomly determine whether to transition the predetermined symbol to the second plurality of free spin states, in response to determining the predetermined symbol transitioning to the second plurality of free spin states, cause the display to animate the second plurality of free spin states on the pay line.

Claims (53)

1. A gaming machine comprising:

a credit input mechanism configured to receive a physical item representing a monetary value for establishing a credit balance, the credit balance being increasable and decreasable based at least on wagering activity;

credit meters configured to monitor the credit balance;

a display having a plurality of display positions and displaying a pay line;

a memory storing a plurality of symbols including a predetermined symbol, the predetermined symbol having a plurality of anticipation states and a plurality of free spin states;

a game controller configured to, in accord with the credit balance:

select first symbols from the plurality of symbols stored in the memory;

cause the display to display the first symbols at the plurality of display positions;

determine whether the first symbols include the predetermined symbol that has landed in a display position on the pay line;

in response to determining that the predetermined symbol has landed in the display position on the pay line, randomly determine whether to trigger a bonus game;

in response to determining not to trigger the bonus game, cause the display to animate the predetermined symbol transitioning through the plurality of anticipation states to an unlocked state;

in response to determining to trigger the bonus game, cause the display to animate the predetermined symbol transitioning through the plurality of free spin states to a locked state;

determine whether an award is to be provided; and

in response to determining that the award is to be provided, increase the credit balance based on the award; and

a payout mechanism configured to cause a payout associated with the credit balance.

2. The gaming machine according to claim 1 , wherein the game controller is further configured to award a plurality of free games in response to triggering the bonus game.

3. The gaming machine according to claim 2 , wherein the plurality of free games are associated with respective awards.

4. The gaming machine according to claim 2 , wherein a current award of a current free game of the plurality of free games is at least equal to a previous award of a previous free game.

5. The gaming machine according to claim 1 , wherein the game controller is further configured to cause the display to:

animate an attempt to unlock the predetermined symbol from the display position on the pay line; and

animate a return of the predetermined symbol to the locked state in the display position on the pay line.

6. A gaming machine comprising:

a credit input mechanism configured to receive a physical item representing a monetary value for establishing a credit balance, the credit balance being increasable and decreasable based at least on wagering activity;

credit meters configured to monitor the credit balance;

a display having a plurality of display positions;

a memory storing a plurality of symbols including a predetermined symbol, the predetermined symbol having a plurality of anticipation states and a plurality of free spin states;

a game controller configured to, in accord with the credit balance:

select first symbols from the plurality of symbols stored in the memory;

cause the display to display the first symbols at the plurality of display positions;

in response to determining that the first symbols include the predetermined symbol in a trigger condition, cause the display to animate the predetermined symbol transitioning through the plurality of anticipation states while keeping the trigger condition on the display;

in response to determining that the predetermined symbol is to transition through the plurality of free spin states, cause the display to animate the predetermined symbol through the plurality of free spin states to a locked state while keeping the trigger condition on the display;

animate an attempt to unlock the predetermined symbol and a return of the predetermined symbol to the locked state while keeping the trigger condition on the display; and

in response to determining that an award is to be provided, increase the credit balance based on the award; and

a payout mechanism configured to cause a payout associated with the credit balance.

7. The gaming machine according to claim 6 , wherein, in response to determining that the predetermined symbol is to transition to the plurality of free spin states, the game controller is further configured to cause the display to display an awarding of a plurality of free games.

8. The gaming machine according to claim 7 , wherein the plurality of free games are associated with respective awards.

9. The gaming machine according to claim 7 , wherein a current award of a current free game of the plurality of free games is at least equal to a previous award of a previous free game.

10. The gaming machine according to claim 6 , wherein the trigger condition includes displaying the predetermined symbol in a predetermined display position.

11. A method of gaming with a gaming machine, the method comprising:

establishing a credit balance on a credit meter of the gaming machine in response to a credit input mechanism of the gaming machine receiving a physical item representing a monetary value;

selecting, in accord with the credit balance, first symbols from a plurality of symbols stored in a memory of the gaming machine;

displaying the first symbols in a plurality of display positions of a display of the gaming machine;

in response to a game controller of the gaming machine determining that the first symbols include a predetermined symbol in a trigger condition, animating on the display the predetermined symbol transitioning through a plurality of anticipation states;

in response to the game controller determining that the predetermined symbol is to transition through a plurality of free spin states, animating on the display the predetermined symbol transitioning through the plurality of free spin states to a locked state;

animating an attempt to unlock the predetermined symbol and a return of the predetermined symbol to the locked state;

in response to determining an award is to be provided, increasing the credit balance based on the award; and

causing a payout mechanism of the gaming machine to cause a payout associated with the credit balance.

12. The method of gaming according to claim 11 , further comprising, in response to determining the predetermined symbol is to transition through the plurality of free spin states, displaying an awarding of a plurality of free games on the display.

13. The method of gaming according to claim 12 , further comprising associating the plurality of free games with respective awards.

14. The method of gaming according to claim 12 , wherein a current award of a current free game of the plurality of free games is at least equal to a previous award of a previous free game.

15. The method of gaming according to claim 11 , further comprising, keeping the trigger condition on the display while animating the predetermined symbol transitioning through the plurality of free spin states to the locked state.

16. The method of gaming according to claim 15 , further comprising keeping the trigger condition on the display while animating the attempt to unlock and the return to the locked state.

17. The method of gaming according to claim 11 , wherein the trigger condition includes displaying the predetermined symbol in a predetermined display position.
