Near-to-eye display device with spatial light modulator and pupil tracker
A near-to-eye display device includes a spatial light modulator, a rotatable reflective optical element and a pupil-tracking device. The pupil-tracking device tracks the eye pupil position of the user. Based on the data provided by the pupil-tracking device, the reflective optical element is rotated such that the light modulated by the spatial light modulator is directed towards the user's eye pupil.
1. A near-to-eye display device, wherein the near-to-eye display device when in use is less than 25 cm from a user's eye, the near-to-eye display device comprising:
a computer unit;
a plurality of point light sources;
a spatial light modulator (SLM), wherein light produced by at least one of the plurality of point light sources illuminates the SLM and gets modulated to produce modulated light, and the modulated light is directed on an exit pupil plane that includes a useful portion;
a reflective optical element rotatably mounted to the near-to-eye display device and positioned to be illuminated by light from the at least one point light source to reflect light on an exit pupil plane positioned at an expected location of a user's eye pupil when the near-to-eye display device is in use, wherein rotation of the reflective optical element causes the useful portion to move within the exit pupil plane;
a pupil-tracking device to determine a position of the user's eye pupil; and
an actuator to orient the reflective optical element to a selected orientation, wherein the computer unit activates one or more of the plurality of point light sources and selects the selected orientation in response to the determined position of the user's eye pupil.
2. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is reflective.
3. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator is coupled to the reflective optical element such that the spatial light modulator and the reflective optical element rotate together.
4. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source is mounted on a nose bridge of the near-to-eye display device.
5. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source is mounted on a frame of the near-to-eye display device.
6. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator comprises a magnetic actuator or a motor.
7. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein light projected onto the exit pupil plane includes multiple diffraction orders produced by the spatial light modulator, and the actuator causes one of the diffraction orders to follow the position of the user's eye pupil.
8. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of point light sources and a light selection component responsive to the pupil tracking device.
9. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source comprises an LED.
10. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source comprises a laser light source.
11. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the point light source comprises a red light emitting diode (LED), a green LED, and a blue LED coupled to a fiber.
12. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the SLM and reflective optical element are mounted together in a rotation-coupled manner.
13. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator and reflective optical element are attached at one face thereof such that point light sources of a LED array selectively illuminate the spatial light modulator in response to the pupil tracker's new pupil position detection data.
14. The near-to-eye display device of claim 13 , wherein the spatial light modulator is rotated for angles smaller than a predetermined angle and different light sources are selected for larger angles such that pupil tracking is effectuated.
15. The near-to-eye display device of claim 14 , wherein light wave distribution is recomputed for larger angles such that a higher diffraction order moves into useful portion of the exit pupil plane.
16. The near-to-eye display device of claim 13 , wherein the spatial light modulator comprises an active grating.
17. The near-to-eye display device of claim 16 , wherein pupil tracking is effectuated, grating is actuated for angles smaller than a predetermined angle and different light sources are selected for larger angles.
18. The near-to-eye display device of claim 17 , wherein light wave distribution is recomputed for larger angles such that a higher diffraction order moves into useful portion of the exit pupil plane.
19. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator creates a high-resolution image and the reflective optical element is rotatable to steer the high-resolution image following user's pupil position in the manner that spatial light modulator light is steered towards the pupil and that only a limited degree portion of the field of view of the user is provided by the spatial light modulator and the rest of the field of view of the user is covered by a 2D display.
20. The near-to-eye display device of claim 1 , wherein speckle reduction is provided in the manner that the light wave distribution is determined by a computation that adds a controlled phase variation on the virtual scene.
21. A near-to-eye display device, wherein the near-to-eye display device when in use is less than 25 cm from a user's eye, the near-to-eye display device comprising:
a computer unit;
a plurality of point light sources;
a spatial light modulator (SLM), wherein light produced by at least one of the plurality of point light sources illuminates the SLM and gets modulated to produce modulated light, and the modulated light is directed on an exit pupil plane that includes a useful portion;
a reflective optical element rotatably mounted to the near-to-eye display device and positioned to be illuminated by light from the at least one point light source to project light on an exit pupil plane positioned at an expected location of a user's eye pupil when the near-to-eye display device is in use, wherein rotation of the reflective optical element causes the useful portion to move within the exit pupil plane;
a pupil-tracking device to determine a position of the user's eye pupil; and
an actuator to orient the reflective optical element to a selected orientation, wherein the computer unit activates one or more of the plurality of point light sources and selects the selected orientation in response to the determined position of the user's eye pupil, wherein the near-to-eye display device is a head-worn display device, and wherein the SLM is rotatably mounted to the near-to-eye display.
22. A method comprising:
tracking the location of a user's eye pupil;
rotating a spatial light modulator that produces multiple diffraction orders so that a single diffraction order enters the user's eye pupil;
illuminating the spatial light modulator using a first light source; and
measuring an angle, and driving the spatial light modulator with different data to change the diffraction order that enters the user's eye pupil for angles above a threshold.
23. A method comprising:
tracking the location of a user's eye pupil;
rotating a spatial light modulator that produces multiple diffraction orders so that a single diffraction order enters the user's eye pupil;
illuminating the spatial light modulator using a first light source; and
measuring an angle, and selecting a different second light source to illuminate the spatial light modulator based on the angle.
