Abstract

A system including mode and battery modules. The mode module, based on parameters, determines whether to operate in a shore power, engine or battery mode. One or more batteries are charged based on received utility power while in the shore power mode. The batteries, while in the engine mode, are charged based on power received from a power source. The battery module, while operating in the battery mode, determines a speed based on a temperature within a temperature controlled container of a vehicle and a state of charge of the batteries. The compressor is run at the speed while in the battery mode. While in the battery mode, the batteries are not being charged based on power from a shore power source and the power source from which power is received during the engine mode.

Claims (49)

a battery module configured to, while operating in the battery mode,

determine a first speed based on (i) a temperature within a temperature controlled container of a vehicle, and (ii) a state of charge of the one or more batteries, and

run a compressor at the first speed,

wherein, while in the battery mode, the one or more batteries are configured not to be charged based on power from (i) a shore power source, and (ii) the alternator or the generator from which power is received during the engine mode.

2. The system, of claim 1 , wherein while operating in at least one of the shore power mode, the engine mode or the battery mode the batteries are configured to be charge based on power received from a solar panel.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the battery module is configured to, while operating in the battery mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off the compressor or adjust a speed of the compressor from the first speed to a second speed; and

the second speed is less than the first speed and greater than 0.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while in the battery mode, limit a speed of the compressor based on a least one of (i) the temperature, or (ii) the state of charge of the one or more batteries.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while in the battery mode, limit a speed of an evaporator fan or a condenser fan based on a least one of (i) the temperature, or (ii) the state of charge of the one or more batteries.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an engine module configured to, while operating in the engine mode, limit a speed of the compressor based on a least one of (i) the temperature, or (ii) the state of charge of the one or more batteries.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while operating in the engine mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, set a speed of the compressor.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the battery module is configured to, while operating in the battery mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off an evaporator fan or adjust a speed of the evaporator fan from a first speed to a second speed; and

the second speed is less than the first speed and greater than 0.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the battery module is configured to, while operating in the battery mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off a condenser fan or adjust a speed of the condenser fan from a first speed to a second speed; and

the second speed is less than the first speed and greater than 0.

10. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a shore power module configured to, while in the shore power mode and based on the temperature, run the compressor at a third speed; and

an engine module configured to, while in the engine mode and based on the temperature, run the compressor at a second speed,

wherein

the first speed is less than the second speed and the third speed, and

the second speed is less than or equal to the third speed.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of:

the shore power module is configured to, based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine the third speed; or

the engine module is configured to, based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine the second speed.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the engine module is configured to, while operating in the engine mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off the compressor or reduce the speed of the compressor.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the engine module is configured to, while operating in the engine mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off an evaporator fan or reduce the speed of the evaporator fan; and

the second speed is less than the first speed and greater than 0.

14. The system of claim 10 wherein the engine module is configured to, while operating in the engine mode and based on the state of charge of the one or more batteries, determine whether to shut off a condenser fan or adjust a speed of the condenser fan from a first speed to a second speed.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while in the battery mode, reduce a speed of the compressor from the first speed to a minimum speed that maintains the temperature within a predetermined range of a predetermined set point temperature.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising a control module configured to increase the speed of the compressor from the minimum speed to a second speed if shore power or power from at least one of a solar panel, the alternator or the generator is received by the one or more batteries.

17. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while in the battery mode, modulate a speed of a condenser fan based on a load on the compressor, a speed of the compressor, or a discharge pressure of the compressor.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the battery module is configured to, while in the battery mode, shut off vapor injection independent of a speed of the compressor.

19. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

the compressor;

eutectic plates;

an evaporator;

an evaporator fan;
